First off, this isn't a Centerpole level coop, but there aren't too many grain silos in northwestern Montana. I built this entirely by myself over the course of the summer and I'm pretty pleased with it so far. We'll see how it holds up once it's got a couple feet of snow on the roof.

Started out in what looked like one of the flattest areas on our property, ended up spending multiple evenings digging out rocks to get the cinder blocks to sit level. There was a solid 8" drop over the 9ft width of the coop.

Original goal was to have it done by the end of May when our new chicks would be ready to go outside. Our order got delayed, then the feed store couldn't get half of them, so I placed an order online. Ended up getting the chicks a full month and a half later than we planned on. Gave me a much looser timeline but not getting eggs out of them until sometime over the winter.

In hindsight, I wish I had gone with 3/4" flooring and tin on the roof. When the shingles need replacing, I'll probably switch to corrugated steel. If the flooring wears out, I'll likely switch to 1x6 planks to allow some of the dust to settle out.

I also can't believe the number of painting projects I've done in my life without owning a paint sprayer. It's a PITA to clean but I put 5 gallons of primer and paint on in what amounted to an hour and a half probably.

I would have preferred to get everything painted before I put the wire up but schedule didn't work out and we were ready to have those stinky SOBs out of the house.

Nice work. After a few ongoing projects are finished I'm building one too.
I don't think you know me.

Man that looks great! TBH I like your design and might use it for our new coop which is on my list for completion by spring.

Couple questions:

Did you use hardware cloth at rafter openings (just curious)?

How did you account for proper ventilation?

How many chickens are you planning to hold?

Look forward to hearing back and great work!

Found plans on the NDSU Ag Dept. website. I used Plan #6248, but there's a ton of different plans to peruse: https://www.ag.ndsu.edu/extension-aben/buildingplans/poultry

I have hardware cloth I'm planning to hang on the eaves, just haven't gotten it up yet. I'm thinking there's enough ventilation through the rafters, but I'll add a couple of vents if I need to. The other thing I had in mind was to put hardware cloth behind the windows and then hinge the windows so I can open them during the summer. The issue is we're in the 70s/80s for a high and the 30s/40s for lows right now and opening and closing them every day sounds like a pain.

We're at 25 right now - 19 chicks and 6 that we already had. We ended up with more chicks than we intended. Had to place an order online and ordered more than I planned to get a price break, then my wife picked up 4 olive eggers at the feed store because she couldn't help herself. The original plan was to have about 20, and my chick orders were taking attrition into account, but was not taking account of my wife's impulse buy.

Looks great! One tip: not sure how many coons are in your area but they can and will grab and rip off heads through the wire. You might consider running some finer opening wire (1x2 max) on the bottom 2 feet.

In the 3 years we've been on our property, I haven't seen one. I've seen them road killed within about 30 miles, but they're pretty much not existent in our valley. Bigger issues would be our Weimaraner, hawks/eagles, mustelids, bobcats, mountain lions, and bears. Also my neighbor's cats that roam free.

They will all be free range on our property. We haven't lost one yet to a predator, which honestly surprises me.

Chicken math. My favorite kind of math. Moar chickens is always the answer.

You build laying boxes inside yet?

I've got a couple boxes I made in the old coop that I'll move over and then build a few more. I'm thinking I'll probably do 6 total.

ETA - If it gets to the point where we can't handle the egg numbers, we'll just off load a few to friends. Wife and I may have to go through a mediator to determine whose chickens get removed though. The blue laced Wyandottes aren't going anywhere.

That's my Speckled Sussex. I'd let them in the house if I could get away with it. They are definitely the preferred girls.
