I have a Benelli M2 that probably has about 1500 rounds (probably less). I don't consider that a large amount of cycles but maybe I am wrong. The shotgun is about two years old.

Randomly and clean or dirty the shotgun will fail to finish a cycle. Or in other words the bolt sticks back.

What could be wrong?

Just a bad recoil spring?

I'd Check the rails in the receiver where the bolt rides for burrs or small pieces of metal or dirt. That could prevent it from returning to the closed position. And check that the housing for the recoil spring is fairly clean and oiled/lubed.

Does a shell come out onto the lifter? Is the lifter up or down? What aftermarket parts does it have on it?

Assume you've cleaned the guts of the trigger pack really well? Hose it out with brake cleaner and then re-oil. Do the same with the mag tube. Cures 95% of shotgun issues.

Yep. She'll on the lifter 9 out 10 times. Occasionally I see this happen with a shell kind of hung, not yet on the lifter so probably a separate issue.

Not only have I cleaned that and the rest of the shotgun, but I swear it seems to happen a little more often after a cleaning. Not the first shots after the cleaning though so probably not a real pattern, just my imagination.

I use it for 3Gun and clean it maybe every 250 rounds. Trigger and all.

Have you taken off the stock and cleaned out the recoil spring tube?

Now that I haven't done.

When you say the bolt sticks back, is it being held back by the bolt catch or just getting stuck somewhere?

How far does your magazine tube spring go past the end of the tube when the cap is off?

Sounds like you clean your M2 waaaay more than I do so I doubt that's an issue. I've never taken the trigger group out for cleaning, it only comes out when I need to replace parts so it's been a few years. Bolt and inside receiver gets wiped off once a year at most.

Always in a match.

Normally I fix the issue but smacking the side of the receiver with my palm or fist, bolt moves forward and back to operating as normal.

Last match two clean stages, one with three failures to cycle. Then shot it after the match with no issues.

Went to google a problem on my M2 and this thread came up. Should have known outdoor board would be best source…

I just got back from a duck hunt and went to clean my M2. Reassembled, bolt pulled back to reinstall barrel, pushed release button and nothing. Bolt was stuck. Only "fix" I found on benell forums was to remove trigger assembly, but did that and recoil spring. I've taken everything off and bolt it jammed stuck. New one for me and I can't figure it out. Any ideas?

Maybe the barrel is not fully seated against the receiver?

I have taken mine apart many times and every time I fight getting the barrel back in at least a little.

I finally found someone else that I think had same problem as me.

At this point I'm sending it to their warranty department. Mostly annoyed because I've only had it about a month. Shoots great other than this issue.

Take the barrel back off, bolt out and put it back in. Make sure bolt moves freely before putting barrel back on. Sometimes it takes a little fiddling to get the bolt back in correctly.
