If you were going to buy a cabin for mountain hunting, that was within 3 hours of a major airport, where would you look. What state/area?

Are you mounting on wall or in order to see if you can create baby cabins, cause it makes a difference...

We love the Estes Park area. Is it hard to get tags there?

Not opposed to New Mexico at all, or Montana... Wyoming.... etc

I would pick New Mexico. Just have a plan for water at the cabin.

I'd first research every state and their draw system. Just because you own a cabin/land in a state doesn't mean you will be able to hunt there every year. Over the counter tags are getting less and less.

New Mexico has become a blue lib state that will only get worse with taxes and anti 2A. Colorado headed that way.
I travelled and hunted in the west some.
Idaho or Montana is where I would head.

- 3 hours from major airport
- Good hunting and easy to get landowner tags
- Elk, mule deer, bear, etc etc etc. the more species the better
- Decent cabin that wife and other non hunters can enjoy anytime
- mountains. Streams. Beautiful is a must.
- Budget 2MM or less
- Bonus points if in area I can VRBO it.
- fewer neighbors the better

You are about 10 years too late imo. Everybody looking is looking for the same thing. Today you need to go 5 hours away from the airport to find your cabin at that price point. I've hunted and stayed with friends of a friend in the Bond, Co. Area and that is a neat area- on the Colorado River and the private property along the river backs up to blm land/ mountains. And it's already gotten stupid expensive.

Colorado does seem way too $$ as it is popular. And I am not lookin for a luxury house. Just something clean, dry, with water/electric. Nothing fancy.

I live in Meeker CO and it is still affordable compared to Steamboat and Aspen. In the heart of OTC hunting, great fishing and lots of stuff to do. But the politics of CO are getting too blue for my liking. I will be moving to Wyoming or Idaho in next year or so.

If I had a $2MM budget, I would buy in Montana and buy a property that gave restricted access to public land. Montana has every big game species, amazing upland bird opportunities, ducks, turkeys and amazing trout fishing. And I have been listening to a BHA podcast about Montana regs. You have opportunity for tag at least every other year on your own land and if you alternate species you would likely have stag every year. They also have have lots of OTC tags for non residents so you would have the opportunity to hunt every year

I personally love everything about Montana - amazing place everywhere I have been there. I think within a 3 hour radius of Missoula, Bozeman , Helena and the already mentioned Kalispell and Whitefish you could find something that would fit.

This. Montana or Idaho all the way with that budget.

I like the location of the first one better. Wayyyyyy more game in there. But you need 10 more acres to hunt your own land I believe.

that's a badass big cat on that second property

Also crazy to think that you can't hunt your own property until you have 160+ acres

Yeah but for me, if you're going to shell out 2mm, then I would be further from town based on my little town and where the game are. That first one gets you so close to some great public land and some really great neighbors lol.

Somewhere out near Talkeetna.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Ideally, we would like to be outside of town. And being next to public access is great so long as it isn't non stop trespassing problems. Not really wanting anything in a super high traffic public hunting area.
