About a year ago I shared my big dreams about getting these things started around Crawford. I am about 2/3 done with phase one of my experimentation year. If you are curious, I made a tiktok to show the birds at varying phases. I'm giving it my best and learning the "dos and don'ts" for the future of this project! The video is below.

Kudos to you, and I really hope that you and others make it work.

Do you have your own website? I googled what you suggested on the video but it returned a bunch of generic results, nothing that looked like it might be from or about you.

Are you setting up any feeders etc? I was at a ranch north of San Angelo that had a few barrel feeders for their quail and it seemed like they were helpful.

Very interested in seeing how this turns out for you! I remember reading the article you are talking about when it came out.

I love working my bird dogs and miss the days when we had quail all over the place at our little spot east of Wall. Would be very interested in purchasing some as well for an experiment on a couple farms of ours around the Wall/Vancourt area. Having wild birds for my kids to hunt in the coming years would be a dream come true.

They are prolific in the Reno Nevada area where family live. I'm always amazed that they live and thrive in the subdivisions and golf courses. The landscaping is mostly irrigated so I guess they depend on the water. Cool birds to watch.
I'm wondering if trapped live adult birds from out there could be relocated to Texas successfully.

Gambels seem to thrive in residential settings in Arizona as well. I suspect that it may be due to a combination of factors: plenty of water, enough to eat, and perhaps most importantly an absence of predators.

Yep, tons of Gambel's around my wife's family in AZ neighborhoods.

You've got me reading on this now - I didn't realize that the habitat range/area for a covey is only around 40 acres. Seems like a really fun project, trying to build the appropriate habitat etc. Doesn't seem overly complicated, but you definitely have to be intentional about the setup.

I find that as I get older, I'm less interested in the kill and more so in taking care of the habitat for the game.

I live on a golf course in Arizona and they're everywhere. The hatch this year was huge. About 30 minutes before sunset I cruise around in the golf cart and see several coveys most days.

I would say 8 to 12-15. But as you probably know sometimes 2 females lay in a single nest and I've seen some bigger groups.

I have a ton of them in n my place here in San Diego area. ~25 or so hatchlings in the main covey. It is fun watching them grow over the past couple of weeks. They drink out of my pool.

When I lived in eastern Washington, we hunted them there. The coveys were huge, 75-100 birds, but we'd only run into them every 1-2 miles. This was in farm country where they mainly grew wheat. I've been told there are a lot less birds since the farming transitioned to mainly hay.

Waldo- do you think the pen raised birds have just as good of chance to make it as the wild caught and transplanted birds from out west?

Do the pen raised birds have the precocial instincts to avoid predation like the wild birds do?

Yeah I just meant if you thought the pen raised stood as good of a chance as the wild birds in the Commerce study that had been trapped and transplanted.

Can you offer any tips for incubating quail eggs? I tried with some eggs included in the last batch of pen raised birds we got for a hunt & they developed but never hatched.

All the power to you! I really hope your project is a huge success. But, is there any natural food supply and cover? Seems like if there are good food and cover you'd have a good bobwhite population.
Keep us posted.

Thank you. I was trying to hatch them back in February-March. You are probably right about the humidity. I may need to get a better incubator. Mine doesn't allow for temperature adjustment & I may not have had a hydrometer at that point. I have not yet mastered maintaining humidity yet.
