Strategy for mowing overgrown yard

Hypothetically, let's say you had 6.13 acres of "yard", and I would never do this, but just for conversation, let's say you were out of town for a couple straight weekends and the couple of weeks before that the "yard" was too wet to mow. So you wake up one morning to a "yard" that is severely overgrown. What's the best strategy to make the yard look somewhat normal and not a hay field during harvest? Do you mow in a circular fashion from the outside in with the chute going towards the inside so that you repeatedly cut the tailings smaller and smaller? Do you use a high setting first to cut the lawn and then mow on regular setting a second time? Do you just succumb to the idea that you are going to spend many hours of raking? Do you figure out a way to hook up a section of chain link fence and drag behind your mower after you mow to see if it will act as a rake? Hypothetically

I'd mow in the direction to where it blows the clippings to outer yard so you don't keep running over them as you mow - those clippings will build up and bog down the mower.

And as you mentioned it's probably best to mow at a higher setting first and then come back 2 or 3 days later and mow lower if possible.

Start high setting. Chute towards the outside. Then lower deck and mow again, chute towards the outside.

Then mow across clipping rows alternating chute discard.

ETA: this is at least a 3 beer, 2 cigar job on the mower.

Okay, so circle, circle, snake. Hypothetically, if you had a set of regular blades and a set of mulching blades, would it make sense to change blades in between one of these patterns, or would that just make the problem worse?

And mow when the grass is dry as it won't clump up as bad.

There's always the old fashioned way: pay someone else to do it.

High setting, blow to the outside, and take small "bites" (half mower width) the first time over

What you are describing is almost every week for me. Ranch in the Ozarks has about 7+ acres of yard and fescue/orchard grass. With the rains we have been having the grass is at 12" or so every 5-7 days.
It will depend on your mower and it's capacity in width and HP. I have a 72" Ferris with 38 HP.
I throw the clippings inside but I only do 15 ft or so wide strips at a time so it does not build up so much in the middle. Then at the last I run over the 72" wide or so heavier clippings that are left. I go over those a couple of times fairly fast and it disperses them nicely.
When I'm done I have no clippings and move to the next strip and repeat.
If you throw it to the outside you will just have the entire yard of heavy clippings and will have to go over it two to three times.
I cut at the highest setting (5") as in the heat the yard Just does better.
On the part of the yard immediate to the house (about an acre) I'll cut again in 3-4 days at about 3.25-4" settings. That part of the yard has a sprinkler system and does not get as dry.
I have to cut at least once every 7-10 days and do the above method. Never have noticeable clippings and no need to rake.
I have tried the " throw it to the outside" method and it makes you work twice as much and much more time.

Your situation is similar to mine - I have 7 acres of Bahia and natural grasses that I mow about once a month. I use a big ZTR to do it. It'll be about knee high when I mow it if we get good rain. At first I used to mow in a circle so it was blowing the grass to the outside and I don't keep mowing over it.

However, lately I've started striping back and fourth. Yes I'm blowing grass and then mowing over it - but you know what - after 50 hours of doing it this way I prefer it. The final product looks better with the striping - and moving over the grass a few times does get it cut smaller and you notice less. I'll alternate mowing north / south or east/west every other mow

I don't rake it, I don't do anything like that. The grass breaks down pretty quickly in the summer heat and by the next time I mow what's left is brown and gets chopped up super quickly. Areas that get absolutely covered with cut grass I'll hit a few times with the mower until it's dispersed enough. I used to overthink it but now I just mow it and it always ends up looking great.

On that size at that height, I'm bush hogging it. I'm not interested in beauty work with my commercial ZTR. I'm interested in tearing it down to 3" tall with 65HP of fury. Quick work.

From my experience with this, rent or pay someone to shred 30hp small tractor. Come back with uout mower to just blow to outside the cut grass. Then come back and mow to height. Saves stress/wear on your mower. Do not mow when grass is damp from rain or dew.

I guess my question is if you're letting it get knee high every month, why not just transition it to native grasses and wildflowers and as least get benefit from it?

Hall passes is what I usually do with tall grass/ bahai grass.

Mow with chute outward, especially if you're cutting multiple times. Bogging down isn't worth it.

I was talking with my mower salesman/ friend this morning about mulching blades vs regular. He said regular will get more suction and lift under the deck and throw the grass farther. Mulching mulches but there's less air flow under the deck and it can't disperse the grass out as fast.

Maybe mulch the last pass you're planning across the first one or two passes direction, to grind it up the last bit.

As has been said mow with the chute out, circles for a riding mower. If you have a zero turn strips back and forth are quicker.

After you're done go back over it at the same height as close to 90 degrees as you can. Especially in this heat the dried grass should spread out enough to not be noticeable and you can bump the speed up because you're just spreading the clippings.

Bahia and natural grasses; That looks like a good stocking rate potential. Hard to tell with the droughts these days but in that pic that looks like one unit plus per acre.

I wish I could do something with the grass besides just cut it. Years of fertilizing have made for some excellent grass. But we don't have enough open area to bail it and we converted our exemption to wildlife management so I don't have cows anymore. At least mowing is in my top 5 favorite things to do

Before I got my ZTR I was using a 34hp tractor and a 5ft shredder. I literally Cut my mow time in half going with a zero turn. The one I got has a suspension on the frame, and suspension seat. It's not a Ferris but it's as close as I could get in my budget. Much more comfortable than a tractor for multiple hours of mowing
