7 year old mixed breed. Never had allergies before. This year, started itching a lot and gnawing at her tail and body to the point where she was losing hair. Took her to vet they gave her some anti itch and some other pills to help her skin heal.

We've run out of pills and now shes itching again, although no skin issues yet.

Any treatments that aren't a $75 supply of pills for 2 weeks?

You can try Colloidal oatmeal shampoo baths and Benadryl as a cheaper alternative.

We have to use apoquill(sp) seasonally for our dogs allergies where ahe lick and chews at her paws pulling hair and making them raw. $40 for a months supply.

Anxious to hear the responses to this too. We are in the $75/mo Apoquel for my 90lb Lab. Works pretty well in the colder parts of the year but not as well in the summer.

Y'all do realize there is a loading dose regimen with apoquel and the first couple weeks are more expensive, right?

Had similar issue with mine this spring. Got a cytopoint injection which took care of it. Vet said it's approved as a monthly injection, but it often lasts longer than that or long enough for whatever is bothering them to go away.

Have used dandruff shampoo with the coal tar active ingredient on a couple of our dogs, with great success. It may not be applicable for all itch/scratch problems, but worked on ours.

Cytopoint is the only think that helps our dog in the summer. Typically only need 2 to get through the hot months that irritate their skin.
OP, definitely worth a try.

Costco fills pet Apoquel and it is generally cheaper than Chewy.

My vet told me to skip the expensive "medicated" and "anti-itch" shampoos and use plain old regular Dawn dishwashing liquid. He said frequent dermatitis in dogs is often fungal and Dawn allegedly does a good job of killing it off. My dog has been fine since I started washing her with Dawn. It also makes her very fluffy after her bath.

We tried it with our lab who would chew his paws raw and constantly get ear infections. It didn't work, but his pee was significantly more expensive.

At the suggestion of our vet, we switched foods to one without any chicken and with limited ingredients. Worked wonders. No more chewing or ear issues since switching. I think we went with a lamb based food, single protein. None of the more exotic proteins (buffalo, game, etc) agreed with his stomach.

She got bad grey, elephant like skin and chewed at her tail to the point of losing hair. Did the vet route and got some cream to clear up the elephant skin and a medicated bath. It helped some but not completely. Ended up changing food to the HEB branded dog food. No joke, that was the remedy. So now when they run out of that at the store and we give a different type of food, you can see a change.

You talking about the "Heritage Ranch" stuff? I noticed the other day they have come out with a few new flavors of that - it used to be just one I think. We tried it for awhile but one of our dogs didn't really like it so we switched to Victor, which they love. I'm going to buy Lamb today even though it's $15-20 higher than the beef to try it out and see if my itchy boy does better on it.

It's just the basic HEB food. They like the ones for the Sporting dogs, but really any of them.
