Legally, of course…

I've never filed a form 1 but I'm thinking of sawing off an old $300 Mossberg Maverick that I never use. I have a Remington/Vangcomp SBS in jail but don't feel like waiting to get the feel for one. What is the process like? Do I send off the paperwork first and then saw it off and have it engraved? Or do I engrave it first? I'm guessing I don't shorten the barrel until it's approved (or do I remove it and do it and then assemble later once approved)? I'm a total newb on this Form 1 thing.

And yes, I realize that I can Google all this but I like y'all better. Your responses and smart ass comments are much more interesting. Maybe I'll post some titties later to make this even more fun.

Sawed off the barrel, put a foregrip on it, added a silencer, swapped the stock out for a pistol brace, added an undermount grenade launcher with grenades loaded with Fentanyl.

Pretty sweet. Gonna take it to the range after I get really drunk and high.

Most people do:

1) file paperwork
2) engrave while waiting (if you care to engrave)
3) get approved form
4) modify gun

I haven't engraved most of my personally owned NFA that were "manufactured" on a Form 1. ATF has flip flopped on that rule (for non-FFLs) so many times including with the recent brace ruling. If it's something that already had manufacturer marks, like your shotgun, I don't engrave. If completely home built like a suppressor or AK from flat, I do engrave. Might be worth doing some reading and deciding for yourself.

My friend sawed his off so it would fit behind the tractor seat for rats and snakes when shredding pastures. Not sure what forms he filled but but I think he called them STFU-1 or something. Very easy to get filled out and get approved.

If you are doing this to a cheap gun for a utilitarian purpose like this, that's the route I'd go. If you want something to take into public or the range then yeah you're gonna need to get into the weeds and do it right.

1. Get second barrel for the shotgun
2. Do what you will with second barrel
3. Don't tell anybody
4. Don't gangbang or rob banks with it. Basically don't be a moron.
5. Profit

If you already have one in jail it will likely get paroled before a form 1 gets approved. Why bother spending the extra 200, unless you want 2 SBSs. Otherwise follow all previous advice posts.....

When you get the shotgun you can get a blue heeler & pretend you're Mad Max.

Then of course you can have your son dress us like this kid with the metal boomerang & Flintstone outfit to make a hell of a team.

That's my sons favorite movie. He is probably getting the boomstick from Army of Darkness (Stoeger coach, even though the script says Remington, it is not) for Christmas.

Just cut the barrel down to 18.125 inches and don't worry about it....
