Does anyone have any tips for this? I know you are supposed to let them dry for a few days in the shade. Would it work to get some milk crates to store them in? Just not sure if they would get enough ventilation. Thanks in advance.

Panty hose.

Let onions dry out, cut stalk and root hairs. Then drop into panty hose. Tie a knot, drop another onion. Repeat

Store in cool, relative dry dark place by hanging from a rod.

Will keep along tome

+1 for panty hose. Used to hang them in my Grandmother's garage all the time when I was younger.

Know when I was growing up, our house was pier and beam, so there was about 2 ft of crawl space under there. After we dug the potatoes, it was my job to go under there and spread them out, single layer. Close the crawl hole till you needed some, get them out. Dark and cooler there, lasted well. Would be some starting to sprout by garden time next year if they lasted that long, but no major problems .But somehow I doubt you really want to go that route even if you could!

The grocery store mesh bags that are used for oranges, tangerines, etc, or even onions, that is what I use, for storing onions. Hang them off of the garage shelves until thoroughly dried, then bring them into the house.

I always 'string' my onions. You can search youtube for the technique. The kids each generally handle this task now that they are old enough. We will pull them when ready, spread them onto something that let's air circulate around them while we work and then we use bailing twine to string up bunches of 'reasonable' weight. These usually hang in our milkhouse to dry out. They can sit for months. We sell or cut them off from there. For potatoes, they always end up in a bunch of old buckets. They seem to keep OK there. We are in a dry climate so, things seem to last a while.

Yes. I use it all the time on my inline pool filters.
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

The best luck I have ever had with onions was last year. I set them on a table in my barn for probably a month and a half until they were dry and hard as a baseball. Then I put them on rack with hardware cloth in that same barn where it was very hot. They lasted until Christmas. I have done the panty hose thing but it was kinda a pain.

We stored potatoes last year in a closet in a cardboard box. Only problem we had is they started sprouting at planting time again but not one of them rotted. That was a good 8 months or more in storage.

We had shelves in our carport with hardware cloth that the onions and potatoes laid on up above the car. worked great.
