Ideas for lifting storage items to attic

I posted this question on the Home Improvement Board, but this Board gets more traffic.

As I get older, it gets harder and harder climbing the attic stairs with stuff to store in the attic or to remove from the attic. I'm thinking of putting either a small block and tackle or an electric winch in the attic tied to a lifting net. One of the problems with that idea is that the filled net will bump up or down the attic ladder.

Any other better ideas?

This is probably an expensive idea, but maybe purchase a small elevator (think dumb waiter) and cut new access into the attic. There are probably better ideas out there. This is not something I have experience with.

Find a teenager that lives in your neighborhood and pay him to do it.

Google "attic lift for garage" and there's about a hundred results.

Bigger stairs. Like a normal stairway with hand rails
... but that will take up floor space.
A materials handler elevator.
Garage sale, ebay, Craigslist, TexAgs classifieds and get rid of stuff to make space to keep your attic stuff at ground level.

Buy a plastic shed, put all your attic stuff in there, lock the door and burn it all.

Get a plastic snow sled, strap box of crap onto sled, pull up ladder with winch. I got a cheap winch off e-bay that has a wireless remote control. It's 12v, you could use a DC adapter if you have power in the attic or run and electrical box off a light.

I like that idea.

1) real but expensive options

2) you're dumb for having this problem, just get rid of the problem

3) redneck engineering answer the OP picks

The OB always delivers

What you need is Aladdin Storage Lift. Works well my parents installed one many years ago so they could get stuff in and out of the attic.

1st off the best weekends for garage sales are payday weekends. Next donate to goodwill or your favorite charity.
But if you do decide to winch it up into the attic, make sure you're tied off to a rafter. You'll still have to lift your stuff off the hook.

Bolt a come along to the rafter that is most directly centered within the ladder opening. Ratchet whatever you need right on up. Got a water heater into my attic this way last summer.

If you have that much stuff it's time for a yard sale.

My granddad after he turned 80 would call me and say that grandma said I had to come over because he needed things moved between the attic. I'd move the ladder into place and go up into the attic to move whatever he needed up/down. He'd follow me up the ladder with my grandma yelling at him "you're going to hurt yourself! Don't ask me to do anything for you tomorrow when you're laid up on the couch!" He'd mutter under his breath at her and start lifting things around the attic. He was a tall man and usually smash his head against a roof nail and bleed everywhere. He'd then be laid up on the couch the next day with my grandma waiting on him hand and foot.

It seemed to work well. Don't know why you'd want to do anything different.

I've built an attic lift using a wood platform and a boat lift. Not cheap and somewhat tricky to get the platform to hit the hole perfectly square.

I find this pretty funny. I'm not that old yet, but I had a bad habit of doing what your grandpa did when I was up in my attic. I had a hardhat laying around in the garage and took it up to the attic. Sounds funny, but I wear it every time I'm in the attic for any length of time. Generally saves me from at least one head bump and scrape every time I'm up there.
