Deader than dead. Base of trunk looks rotten and split

What's with the green grafting tape at the bottom?
It only took me a year to figure out this place is nuts!

Cut it down and use it to cook with. Its like mesquite light.

Possibly sun scald. But who knows!

Jose hit it with a mower a few too many times. Btw what's that rock with a handle behind it?

I think sun scorch is the culprit on this one. Damaged the bark which opened up a path for insects to finish it off.

The green tape at the bottom would have girdled the tree & killed it anyway. Always remove that stuff....looks innocent but has killed plenty of trees.

Did someone dig a hole and pour concrete in it's root zone?

Upon further inspection, it's a make shift grave stone - probably for a pet.

Was that poured or placed on the surface?

It's just a stone set on the surface. This tree is really in the shade so not sure on sun scorching. I guess that green tape could have cause the issue, that's what connected it to the stake.

I don't think they're the longest lived trees.

That's a dead-bud, not a red-bud

We planted a redbud on top of our cat at our old house.

It looked really great the next spring.

I really wish I could be there to see the new owners face if they ever dig it up.....

We planted one where our old dog used to like laying in the front yard to get some sun on his old bones. Dumb ***** that bought the house from us cut it down a couple of years after she moved in, it was a great looking tree, no idea why she hacked it down.

Unless they HAD to do something structurally, why on earth would some cut down a healthy redbud. They're one of the most attractive ornamental trees you can find and difficult to get established. I'd be pretty upset too.
