So in my last post I mentioned a fellow that guides some. He has a lake trout addiction.

So this is Brandon Owens. A good friend, but he has a lake trout problem. He can't help but try to catch them.

But he is really good at helping others catch them.


This one might've broken the state record, but was released. Catch and release of trophy fish is required of most guides.


Brandon's 8 year old caught a 25 pounder and a 27 in the same weekend. Brandon only managed a 15. Colten, his son walked over to his hole as he released the 15, "mine were bigger than that."

Two things:

Lake trout is probably my favorite fish: fry it, grill it, smoke it, it's all good.

Second: releasing lakers is frowned upon in the Great Lakes as they are often pulled up from 50-100 feet of water and don't survive. I wonder if these are surviving the release or caught shallower?

They are hunting pretty shallow in the winter. As long as you don't keep them out of the water too long, they do fine. If it is cold enough that the air does damage, they are usually in a heated hut.

He fishes all year. He just bought a really nice boat to guide in the spring/summer. He has a day job, so Brandon mostly guides Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Sport Fish Colorado has other guys that can help you during the week.

Most of the best fishing is when they are shallower. 40-60 feet. After ice out they are at 20. During the dog days of summer, Brandon has a deep water release device. He drops them down and watches them swim away on the graph. Always some morality, but the guides do everything they can to protect the big fish.

If you like eating lakers, pups, under 22 inches, are unlimited and take is encouraged. A laker pup trip might be a 30 fish day. Lakers are not my thing, but after I have a limit of trout, I'll go chase pups just to add meat to the freezer. I've left with 10 and a limit of trout.

Do the pup lakers taste like anything? Or are they pretty bland?

They are very mild. If you don't like salmon, you might really like lake trout. They have less of a fishy flavor than good trout or salmon. I put a bunch of chipotle pepper on them and make tacos out of the ones I catch.

I'm no expert, but spot lock and dropping jigs or trolling big flatfish on down riggers is what I've heard. Never tried it.
