I am thinking about buying this. Anyone have idea of good price / value? New wiring/lights. Runs good. New tires, paint.

Probably mid- to high-30s. They're likely asking much more because they want their money back on the paint and tires. Are there pics before the paint?

I wouldn't pay more than $15-20k as it sits, but I'd much rather have a surplus one vs one that's been prettied up

I just can't image owning one after driving hundreds of miles in those damn things. We had a good time trashing them out but they're not what I consider to be a fun ride when you're so far removed from other passengers, etc.

Best of luck!

Is it a civilian H1 that has been stripped or is it a military M998 variant? What engine? 6.5 or 6.2. Miles?
M998's that have not had the hell run out of them are becoming harder and harder to find.
If you add a soft top kit to this one with soft doors it will cost around $4500-$5000 for the OEM military kit.
Check to see if this truck has a new style controller box and that the glow plugs have been changed out to the new style that will not expand.
If it still has the old style glow plugs use caution as they are more than likely expanded and can break off when removing them. Leaving the pieces on top of the cylinders.
Good military surplus M998's basic with no tops/doors bringing $25-28k on average right now.

I paid 18k for mine a couple years ago. Been offered 25 and 30k for it. It's a 93... full soft top, upgraded seats, sound bar, consoles

Any surplus one that you get is going to be motor pool problem child. You are much better off with this version.

You're assuming whoever bought it actually went thru it properly. I don't trust anyone who says they put new wiring in a car like that. Guys are buying them to flip while putting as little work as possible in them. I trust my work better than some flippers

Around 2000 there was a group of Marine Corp HMMWV's that was traded to a government contractor for work performed. It was non authorized and the gov stepped in to limit the sales to civilians. They required them to be sold only in lots of 20..... most of them went to movie vehicle suppliers and some went to law enforcement, forest service, etc.
Some of those original vehicles have got to individuals. There was only like 300 or so.
They were all in Marine Corp CARC Camo pattern. None were desert tan.
Those vehicles were in excellent shape with very low miles. A few of them ended up at private government contract American General part depots.
If you can find one of them they were excellent vehicles.

I have heard getting parts/having repairs done if it has an issue is virtually impossible. Any truth to this?

Not at all. Lots of parts are purely GM. Half shafts, engine parts, etc.
There are multiple places and parts suppliers. Pages of parts on E-Bay.
Google HMMWV parts and you will find multiple suppliers and sources.

I have a local diesel guy that is fine with being adventurous. When something goes down, I spend some time researching then get parts ordered and we discuss what to do. I tried to change flow plugs on my own but realized that a side my size trying to crawl around the engine block was not fun. Got it just to him to finish the job after replacing two of them. Also changed out my starter brain at the same time along with a new key ignition to replace the old one.
