I want to get a pair of prescription polarized sunglasses for fishing. My problem is I'm so blind that costas and Maui Jim's won't make them, or at least not in any of the dozens of frame options I've tried.

Previously I always had horrible cheap clip on polarized lenses. But they are too dark for my normal fishing in small streams that are shady. I struggle getting enough light anyway because I'm totally blind in one eye and the other one is crazy nearsighted.


Anyone else that's really blind have a recommendation?

Depending on the rx, oakley might be able to do it. They were doing some badass stuff with high rx before I left the industry

I don't know my prescription, but I'm pretty damn old and blind. I have some Oakley Custom Flacks that I love.

Tried the Oakley custom flax and all the other ones they offer for prescription, none of them will take my level of correction.

I had some polarized prescription Ray Bans years ago. I know I ordered them online but can't remember exactly where. They worked great for fishing.

What is the best way to go about getting these kind of lenses? In store or online?

At high rx, there are so many factors that need to be taken into account. If you know what you are doing, and have the right tech, you can do a lot of seriously crazy stuff with glasses. Case in point, I had a customer that was a -13 plus astigmatism... though let's be real, a minor amount of astigmatism is the last thing to worry about at that power. I successfully dropped his rx into a pair of Maui Jim's. He was ecstatic. I did something even the docs thought was impossible. The docs loved the price tag on what I sold those for. Win all the way around.

The problem is finding a great optician. It's a field that most don't take seriously so finding someone that will genuinely know how to work on things is hard. I can't even make any recommendations at this point as the company that I used for making the stupid stuff went out of business. Glasses tech is so much further along at this point than what I knew that it would take me a bit to learn what and who ate worthwhile now.

I currently wear prescription Costas. I did not realize that there were prescriptions they could not do.

Never had an issue with cocoons moving or falling off. You can shape them somewhat but I put mine on straight out of box and no issues.

Recently purchased some Smith Rx sunglasses and they're fantastic. My prescription is very minor, but I'm once again pleased with their products.

Ordered online and had them in hand in under 2 weeks.

In the same boat, I went with Reks. They have a clone of the Costa Jose frameI think. They don't have the super clear glass lenses that Costa offers but I have been very happy with them, and they are definitely more affordable.

Look into WileyX brand.

This is a little off topic, but have you looked into DMSO for your eyes? Granted i know nothing about your situation, so please forgive the overstep, but I've recently learned about DMSO. Among other things, it's reported to do wonders for improving eyesight. DMSO sounds very "chemically", but it naturally occurs in trees and in garlic. Please consider researching it.
