Hacks for fishing rods in truck bed?

How does everyone carry fishing rods in the bed of the truck without breaking rod tips, etc.? We are usually carrying 2-3 guys worth of rods (10-15 or more) along with coolers, storage boxes, and other loose stuff. We haven't broken and rods lately but I cringe every time we pile it all in. Have a short bed so to sit down in the bed they have to be diagonal or stick over the tailgate. There has to be a better way to protect them and keep them for getting tangled. Thanks

Carry them in the cab.

I usually let mine ride in the boat, but I have a Plano travel rod case, too, that will work. You have to remove the reels, but that is usually quick (and beats broken rod tips and eyes.

I built something similar recently out of PVC. Can modify for your needs

I usually have 6 to 10 in the back of my truck. This is what I use to keep them from getting all tangled up.

Lay rods diagonal. Ratchet strap in all other gear sonit doesnt move is one I've done
Or I also have pvc travel tube. Take reels off and out 2-3 rods in tube. Lay diagonal in bed. You could do this with multiple tubes or buy one large diameter pvc tube and out all rods inside that

It's one reason why I'm not a fan of rods over 7 feet... They dont pack/travel as well

My favorite game on summer sunday afternoons is to count all the trucks headed north on 45 with pyramid weights bouncing off the tailgate. Bonus points if there's still a shrimp on the hook, extra bonus if it's hanging out the rear window of an altima!

But i agree with trident, you should just get a boat and let them ride there!

I use pvc. I will use a hole saw and put my drill in reverse and cut into foam.put foam in each cap. Glue one cap and paint the other and twist it on and off. I have been doing this a long time and never damaged a rod.

I've never been a fan of rods rattling around in the back of the truck or in rod holders going down the road at 75mph while being peppered with rocks and all kinds of road debris. I just care for my gear more than that, as I quit fishing with cheap stuff a long time ago. Almost all of us have some sort of passion we throw money at, and mine has fins.

Once I held a really lightweight custom rod, about 15 years ago, well I was hooked. So then we had to figure out how to transport/store them without damaging them. We started with the grey plano tube that extends, and it would hold a few, but it would also fold over fairly easy when extended and that was a flaw.

Next, we found these rod tubes that are essentially like a 36" 4 pc travel flyrod case, but are actually 7 feet long. Same material and basic diameter - cordura nylon sleeve over 2 inch thin walled PVC, with a padded zipper cap. Except in our case, the length is different at 7 feet.

We used to get some called "rod safe" from a buddy that was a partner in a company called Redfish Bay Rods about the time they were closing up shop. I had about a dozen at one time. A few I sold off to help friends and eventually a few wore out, as they get stood up in corners, leaned, or in the truck bed, and the nylon would basically fall off the end from being worn through. But they lasted at least 8-10 years and some are still going strong, so we looked for something just like 'em. You don't just buy a few rods, in a decade, so you are going to need more tubes. This is much like never having "enough" guns.

About a year ago, we found a vendor called Mountain Cork and ordered around 4 dozen of them to split amongst 4 fishing buddies to make the shipping costs easier per rod. I have been very impressed with them at around $40 each plus shipping (total is less than $50 per in our qty). They have 3 or 4 colors. Here is a link:

https://mtncork.com/collections/casting-rod-cases/products/copy-of-copy-of-casting-rod-case-fits-a-6-1pc-rod

I will also note, that in the meantime, before we found the Mountain cork ones, I also ordered a full length St. Croix rod case that is a double. It is more of an elongated oval when seen from the side and can hold 6 or 8 casting rods with no problem if you alternate them tip to butt. (they have multiple lengths available, if you fish shorter rods)

I would recommend either one of these options, if you are willing to separate your rods from reels. We try not to travel farther than a few blocks at low speeds with reels on our rods. IMHO most of the time a high end rod breaks, it is due to some form of abuse it suffered while not being fished, that caused a nick in the sensitive graphite or a gash.

ETA...this is just a fancier version of what Sunchaser is making above. I also don't need to make them 10 footers. Still amazed at that and want to fish together now.

Velcro strips, secure them all together. Well, maybe 4-6. Keeps them from rolling around or flopping in the breeze. Pvc is better, but velcro does ok.

I've seen about 20 versions of the back of the truck rod rack made out of PVC and also some other things like a PVC rack to go over the top of the tailgate for the tips. It all comes down to whatever else you have in there with them being secured, so that your non-rod stuff doesn't slide into them in the rack and wreak havoc. This is all a comfort level thing.

I will say the only drawback to the ones we use, is that when a bed cover and a short bed silverado crew cab, you may only be able to fit 4 tubes in there and close the lid on your bed cover. But it's not an insurmountable problem.

6" pvc with a a glued cap on one end and a threaded cap on the other. Put a rod sock on each rod and slip inside. I can fit 6-8 rods

Thanks for all the info. Just got a boat so will be hauling them in there when I pull it. We use rod socks and velcro them together some now. Never pulled the reels off for transport but that def makes things easier - Guess I will have to get some big PVC and give that a shot.

Keep the ideas coming.

If you have a headache rack, turn them around with tips up above the rack and strap them down.

Pool noodle split down the side, wrapped around rod tips also work.

But there are classier folks on this board with PVC setups and boats.

Put them in the cab. I cringe when I see weights bouncing off of rods or rods resting on the corner of a truck etc. When you have a weight bouncing off the rod or the rod is resting and putting stress on one point, you are effectively "bruising" the rod. The rod will be weakened in the bruised area and potentially snap… ask me how I know.

Your reels also get road grime all over them which can work its way into the internals. If you can't put them in the cab, I would go with some of the above suggestions of removing the reels and using a rod tube.

Just a note for keeping them in boat. If they don't have a reel on them , they can blow out at 70 mph - don't ask me how I know this

I usually tape the seam between the tailgate and the bed.

Rod sock on every rod, reel cover on the reels, gear wrap/velcro tape them together. Rod socks help with eye damage and tangles, reel covers help keep the reel clean, out of the sun, as well as overall protection. Of course that does not make them damage proof.

I can't tell you how many people I've seen complain about their rod breaking and blaming the manufacturer yet they do exactly what you're talking about- running down the freeway at 70mph with weights banging off the rod.

Unfortunately, I'm not much help to the OP though. By the time I started fishing with nice gear I was mostly fishing out of a kayak and would stow my rods inside the kayak in transit. If wading the surf with no kayak I generally traveled with the rods in the cab of my truck but stuck the tips out the sliding rear window- some risk to the rods but not bad IMHO. These days I'm fishing out of my skiff and use the under-gunnel rod holders/tubes so they're kept out of the way of debris on the road.

Watching this thread.

Fishing is not one of the things that I throw money at, my best rods are the Pflueger combos based on their Presendential spinning reel.

I have a bed cover (no wind) and interested in simple solutions for rods that will fit diagonally in 5.5' bed. Most of my rods will do so.

Cheap Reel covers and rod socks seem like the simplest, best solution.
