Cleaning Traeger Lid

I want to apply a heat resistant self adhesive gasket on my Traeger lid. I am hoping it will decrease loss of smoke and increase its ability to better hold in heat. I doubt both of these - but hey, it's worth a try.

The problem I am having is the lid of the Traeger (on the inside) is covered in a thin coat of sticky black guck (grease/smoke) that is really hard to remove. I need to clean a small portion of this stuff off to apply my gasket. I tried a degreaser and it didn't do anything at all. My next thought was a heat gun/sponge/water or maybe a small wire brush on my dremel. Anyone of y'all have a better thought?

I really appreciate all of y'all's help. Thanks!

Are you just trying to seal the perimeter? If so try steam and cleaner. Also would recommend buying an actual gasket if that is what you are trying to do.

Yes - just the perimeter. And yes - adding a gasket. I will edit the original post. Thanks!

I did this on my old Pit Boss.

Rec #1 (in true OB fashion)- sell the Treager, and buy yourself a Grilla OG or Silverback. If you are worried about temps and smoke/heat retention- the double wall construction of the Grilla is what you are after. It is awesome.

Rec for your actual project-
I scraped the perimeter of my lid with a big flathead screwdriver. That knocked most of it off. Then I hit it with some dawn detergent (a degreaser) and a small wire brush. Then I cleaned it off really well, and rubbed it with some acetone to clean the surface. My high-temp gasket adhered just fine and stayed put for several years of use.

Disclaimer- while it did significantly reduce the smoke escaping from the lid, it made only a marginal difference in temp control. I think the thickness of your steel is FAR more of a factor, and one you just can't overcome with cheap fixes (I tried them all). If I'm completely honest- I also noticed almost no difference in taste or smoke on the final product as a result of the gasket.

Not trying to discourage you in the least. It certainly won't hurt anything, and only costs a little elbow grease really. Your mileage may vary.
