How long do you want to ignore this user?
Does anyone know anymore details than the press release on the airboat accident a few days ago in Rockport? My understanding is that a small girl was killed. I fish there a lot and will be down next week in an airboat so was looking to see if anyone knew more.

Thanks

I just googled it and apparently the girl was thrown from the airboat. Didn't see many other details. Very sad.

I was down there last week, fished and duck hunted Tues, Wed, Thurs (airboats). Accident happened Tuesday in Vinson Slough. Apparently air boat was making a turn and hit a sand bar, threw the girl off and the boat slide over the top of her. Took them 45 mins to get the boat off. She had a pulse at the boat ramp but didn't make it. There are more details I heard that rather not post. Several boats came to help. All the guides pretty shook up about it.

We never wore seatbelts, don't even know if the boats had them, but next time I will be asking. One of our guides said he had been thrown off his years ago.

Note - I went with three diff guides, liked them all, will post their names later.

Howdy,

Thanks for the input. Sounds horrible. They do not wear seat belts on them since my understanding is the risk is greater to role the boat over and drown. I wonder what the girls age was. Also, wonder which guide service. I know from friends of a couple of guys throwing people off last year frequently wonder if same group.

By the way I go with Blake Muirhead he has always been great. Interested to see your list.

The above reply is correct. I worked/drove airboats for TPWD for 15 years and took training. They are without seat belts for a reason. If one starts to flip you want to be as far away from it as possible. Sandbars can be really bad. I hit one on north end of Lake Houston and my dog was right up on the bow. I threw him off and ran over him. I knew I'd just killed my dog. Looked behind me and the mud-covered dog came flying out of the water with nary a scratch. So sorry to hear about this tragic accident and prayers for the family.

I had a high school buddy who was killed after an airboat threw him overboard and ran over him. You're right in that you don't want to be anywhere near the underside of that thing when it flips or tosses you. The driver of the boat ended up going to prison for manslaughter charges. Horrible scene all around. Boat accidents are a pretty big fear of mine after being in a couple of minor ones and had other close calls. My dad almost lost his life back in the late 70s when he was tossed from his ski boat and the boat continued to run in circles around him. The prop came right over his head initially and he would be dead if he had been wearing a life vest.

------- Rockport Duck Hunting and Fishing Guides ------

I believe she was 14. The guide was apparently a Manager with St. Charles Hunting club, but this was a freelance trip when the accident occurred.

I went with Blake on Tuesday. One of his guide buddies came up to him and told the story as Blake was cleaning fish. They shared some opinions on some lack safety with some of the guides down there. Blake was awesome. I found his name here on texags from someone else's post, maybe from you. Blake was booked the other days, so we only got to go one day with him. We only shot 3 ducks Tuesday morning, but should have been more (bad shots), but didn't get many chances either (just bad luck). The fishing started out slow, but Blake worked his ass off, they finally turned on around 2:30 and we slayed them. He would have stayed until dark if he needed to. That guy is a machine, and fun.

Wednesday, we did an afternoon Duck hunt with Dylan Ramzinsky 361-455 zero five one 0. Blake lined him up for us. Dylan is younger, which really resonated with teenage boys. We really liked him a lot. He took us to what they call Honey Hole, limited on Pins and Reds. 1000s of them., Got one Teal. Nothing else came in, was awesome. We were planning to fish with Dylan Thursday morning, but he found oil in the bottom of his boat, thus he had to cancel. But he lined us up another guide (TL) for Thursday morning. Note - Dylan shared a little more detail on the accident, one of his buddies helped on scene....so damn sad, and horrific.

Thursday, we went with an older guide TL Matlock (retired golf course builder) 361-205-three 7 eight five. He only bait fishes but told us he would put on the fish for us to wade (soft plastics). I was a little leary on this since plastics aren't his thing. He took us to one spot, but left pretty quick, then took us North to a 150 ft slough, told us where to wade up to and throw. And we slammed them, both Trout and Redfish. I don't know if I have ever caught that many fish for such a long period, probably from 9:30 - 12 PM, straight killing them. Limited on Reds, 2 of them taggers, and 3 keeper trout.

As for the seat belts, I thought about that as well. I wonder how many actually turn over like that. Would seem when running through the channels (very shallow) the propeller cage would stop the boat from turning over. I could see wearing them through the shallows and then taking off in the deeper areas.

I worked as a driller's helper the summer between my senior and fifth year. A few months after I left to go back to school, one of the drillers I had worked with was killed when an airboat drilling rig he was driving flipped over and pinned him under it. In his accident, he had a bunch of heavy augers in the front of the boat and when he slowed down approaching the shore, the weight caused the nose to go under and the forward momentum caused the boat to roll over forward on top of him.

Thank you for your detailed reply. Glad you enjoyed Blake. He has been doing it as long as anyone out there, and I have found him to be the best if you are experienced and like wade fishing. It was probably one of my posts in the past so glad it helped.

my brother has a daughter and airboat ... freaked me out when i first read it.

bottom line, airboats are simply very dangerous, and if you play hard in one, everyone aboard is at risk.

that is just flat out part of the gig. No way around it.

very sad, but that's how it is.

Even a good boater being smart has some danger.... and part of the whole 'airboat gig' is flying around in shallow water, which is just flat out dangerous.

yep, on Wed and Thursday I was puckered a few times, as that accident scenario was very evident to me that it could easily occur on our boat. (Basically, Tokyo drifting around bends, sliding up towards banks before hitting the throttle for the next straightaway etc)

About ten years ago I was called in as a witness on a case involving a fatality from a guy not wearing his safety lanyard in his boat and was thrown out and the boat circled him and killed him.
Long drawn out case and lots of product liability BS. Also the guy had twice the blood alcohol limit.
Attorney tried to show the need for seat belts in boats but the Coast Guard, NTSB, NMMA had lots of data that getting caught under the boat or trapped in it was a much greater risk than simply wearing the safety lanyard.
Can only imagine the liability/litigation of the air boats.

I've driven a lot of things with 4 wheels, 3 wheels, 2 wheels, and no wheels. Trying to drive airboat was just a laughable experience. Massive power, nearly zero contol most of the time. Beastly thing to maneuver.
