Hypothetically, if there was a place in central Texas that you could purchase an elk/half elk like you would a beef/half beef do you think people would get on board? Would there be a benefit to this versus marketing day meat hunts? Not a large volume thing, just trying to manage population in the most efficient way possible. Processing would be at a state inspected facility, not for retail sale.

Beef seems to be in the neighborhood of $3.50lb hanging weight, $7lb packaged.

Elk will produce about 200# boneless/packaged meat with about half of it being ground and half would be steaks + stew meat.

Lots of factors at play- Weighing the cost vs benefit of hosting hunters vs dealing with payments/processing/delivery of meat etc.

Thoughts?

A couple of the places I know just do the mgmt hunt for what the processors would buy the animal for. I can't remember if I paid $1,000 or $1,200 for my last cow elk. But that was bare bones, didn't include lodging, skinning or anything else. Kinda feel like the mgmt hunt would be easier than just selling the quarters/halves. You just provide information for where they could take the animal to be processed.

Probably have restaurants or other retailers that would be interested.

Can't retail meat that's processed in a state facility, must be USDA.

This is purchasing the animal, which is in turn delivered to the processor as a service to the purchaser. This is not purchasing the meat, per-se.

I would pay $1,000 to go bust a cap in a cow elk. I think the last time we drew out for cow elk in New Mexico it was $622 in 2019.

If the sole purpose is to manage a few elk then it would be easier to sidestep all of the regulatory items related to the insepection and handling of meat and just have people come shoot them. There would most definitely be a market for it, there are quite a few folks around the country that sale meat. To me, its not worth the extra boxes you would need to check, again if its just to kill a few.

You could post how many you had to "cull" and sell them on here and they would likely be taken in a day…

1. Raffle off the opportunity to come shoot Elk.
2. Everyone on the outdoor board spends tons of money on tickets.
3. Profit?
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

This in incorrect. You can process in either for retail sale. The only difference is in a State facility, sales have to stay within the State whereas USDA can be sold in all states.

Just find a "friend" going to hunt. The ones I knew were always offering to give it away since their family would not eat it. Alas, neither would mine.

We drew out something like 14 years in a row before they change the rules on out of state applications. Now you have a 6% chance to get drawn. We had muzzleloader as our last choice and that is what we got. I actually bought a muzzleloader from a fellow TexAgs member because I didn't own one. The very first time I pulled the trigger on it was when I shot that elk. We had planned to get there a day early to make sure it was shooting straight. Trouble with the camper trailer derailed that plan.

Doesn't look like they have elk but Broken Arrow Ranch near Ingram has been doing pretty much what you're talking about for a while now.
