The 1st Deer thread motivated me to go through some old photos looking for my 1st deer pictures.
I'll kick this one off with a favorite of mine:

My maternal Grandfather, R.O. 'Bob' Jackson, Sr. '51. (4th from L to R).
He was a helluva shot taking many deer with his Winchester Model 70 in 30-'06.

Bob Jackson was a longtime steel fabricator in San Antonio, Texas (Jackson Steel Company, Inc). The rifle he used for decades was a gift to him from a grateful concrete contractor just starting out in San Antonio. My grandfather helped him land a big job and he showed up with the rifle as a show of his appreciation.

How did those people ever kill anything without taking the most advanced camouflage with them to the 15 foot tower blinds?

And they did it with ancient rifles with wood for stocks. Probably used soft point bullets too.

That old jeep - we had one. Not the smoothest ride, but they are great

My dad and your grandfather were friends in SA. I met your grandfather when I was young. I also know the concrete man. Small world.
Your family was great folks.

This has to be one of the best sheep hunters in the state of Wyoming. Guy was hunting sheep before the Pilgrims showed up.

1978 or so. That stone cold killer looking dude in that stylin' yellow shirt is me.

My dad on the far right holding a dog that was, as a hound, functionally useless. However, the hog hanging up behind us had just killed my dads best dog. Gutted him, completely eviscerated him by the time we got to the catch. This was before the tactical vests that they have for dogs now. The Bluetick in the pic was just good at posing for pics.....

Dad passed away last year and I found this pic. Hadn't seen it in years.

When I posted it recently on my FB page that is exactly what everyone messaged me & commented about.

The hat, beard & shades look was popular at the time, between Hank Jr. and Charlie Daniels. The old man never came out of that phase.

One of my favorite photos. My Grandpa (my namesake) far left and his hunting buddies. Believe they are in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate NY. Unsure of the year. Guessing 1940's.

My dad '49, second from right, and three friends from Hale Center. Mom said they were hunting somewhere in the Big Bend area, and it wasn't until they got home that they found out JFK had been assassinated while they were gone

So this was 59 years ago this November.

Dad is younger in this picture than his grandson Bender is now.

Not to mention special detergent with which to wash your hunting clothes, special bath soaps, body wash, and shampoo, scent killer sprays, spray cover scent, apple flavored products (even used in places where apples don't grow), etc. Hard to imagine they ever got a deer.

These are of my great grandpa. I literally know nothing about the context of these pictures. My grandpa ran hounds his entire life as far as I know. I have fond memories of going to HEB with him to get all of the old meat from the butcher in the back and then going back to cook it all in a big pot for the hounds. I believe I was 18 or 19 when he passed but I wish I had learned more about his younger years. I know he served for some time in the military but no idea what branch.

My great grandma gave me these pictures 20 years ago and I find myself inspecting them frequently wondering more about the man I called pep-paw.

Years ago my great uncle was the last one left and he was getting things cleaned out of the house for my cousin to move in. They asked me if I wanted anything from the house. I knew exactly what I wanted. Pep-paw had a small thermometer hanging behind his chair that said "Hunter's code: Early to bed, Early to rise, Hunt like hell, and Make up lies". It looks awful from years of pipe smoke and dust collecting on it but it is one of my favorite things ever.

If you don't mind me asking, what was his name? I like that Walker hound that he's holding.
