Want the boards opinion on the best deer corn feeder under $450. 60 acre "ranch" with a 2 acre and 1 acre tank outside of Rockdale. Want to watch, not necessarily hunt until the Grands get to be 16 years old in 10 years. Total novice and want the boards expertise so I don't make a costly mistake. Brand and model number? Feeding corn not protein...yet.

Just grab them from bucees with that price point.

May have luck with the 600 pound stand and fill feeders at bucees. They are made by All Seasons who is arguably the best in the business when it comes to corn feeders. I believe they are $499.
Other than that, at that price you would be better off buying a home made feeder from somebody made from a 55 gallon Barrel, or buying the Barrel buddy system from All seasons which converts any 55 gallon barrel into a 300 pound stand and fill. Pretty simple system to work. Love mine.

In the last 28 years we have literally used 90% of the different brands of feeders. Ours run 24/7/365.... Not just during deer season.
Texas Wildlife Supply in Brady is the brand that has consistently held up the longest for us. Don't rust out and don't leak in two years like many do that are made out of sheet metal. They are expensive but you get what you pay for.... and their customer service is 2nd to none. Just our experience.

I had a couple of the bucees feeders but finally got rid of them. Too hard to work on and a major PITA when you have to replace a motor.

I've gone back to 55 gallon drums with eliminator plates. I'll gladly trade having to stand on the tailgate to fill in exchange for the ability to work on them at face level while they're still full of corn.

Why are we waiting until the grands are 16 to hunt?

I've got about five 55 gallon barrels ready to be used for a feeder. If you want, I can get the parts needed (funnel, lid, spinner, battery, solar panel, legs, etc.) and make you a couple of feeders. I run all seasons spinners on mine with a solar panel and they are dang good. Just let me know.

Live in DFW but get back to BCS often.

I second texas wildlife supply. Their feeders are solid and heavy duty. I have a 600 lb stand and fill that is on its 9th year with zero issues and still solid.

Oh yea. I spent 15K on 13 feeders of a brand that is very popular on the OB. In two years they were rusted out and they leaked horribly.
The company that built them told me they were not for " continuous use".
Switched 5 years ago to Texas Wildlife Supply ... not one leak and not one problem on all 15 of them.
Their blinds are built like tanks also!
What I like is you can pick up the phone and call the owner or his wife and they actually answer it!
Great folks that own their own ranch and use the feeders themselves. He started the company because he could find no long lasting feeders on the market.

Ivce got an all seasons 600lb feeder and several of the Moultrie Pro Magnums going on year 6. Each of them has been solid. For the price youre willing to pay and the time frame you are working on, youll probably have another feeder in the mix anyways.

I'd get a low throw from Lamco or ASF. A bit more than stated budget but they are worth it. Even I can fill one without a ladder

Yeah, I don't understand the fascination with spending more money for an item that does exactly what this does. We have 5 of these and I don't know how old they are, but they have never failed us. I even have one of the smaller 300lb ones for my 'watching' stand outside the fence and it's at least 8 years old or older and has also never given me a lick of trouble.

I run 55 gallon barrels on stand and fill frames, have worked pretty well so far. Use all seasons timers and plates. I run mine pretty much all year (after they run out in January, I don't fill again until March or so out of laziness).

Protein feeders are all gravity feeders. No issues with any of them so far, outside of needing new batteries on occasion and having to replace a motor on one that was probably 10 years old. All easy to do.

Since the OP said "total novice"…why not find a 5 gallon bucket (the kind chlorine tablets come in for a swimming pool works great…heavy duty with a lid) with a lid on it and put a $35 Moultrie motor on it. Hang it in a tree and see what happens.

You're out $50 or so by the time you get the bucket, lid, motor, rope, pulley. That's a cheap way to see if you like this.

it wouldn't be a texags recommendation thread without a bunch of people telling the OP to buy the one that is 2-3x his budget bc anything else he could get will be a complete waste of money.

I used to try to store bird seed in those plastic pool buckets. Squirrels and rats have no trouble chewing through them.
TexAgs: as long as we have each other, we will never run out of problems.

Bankruptcy is temporary, having the OB gear stamp of approval is forever

I'm old, my advice is to get a stand and fill feeder. Skip the winch ups and tail gate feeders. What's easy and safe today, won't be easy and safe tomorrow.

I wouldn't wait until the grandkids are 16...

10 to 12 range is good time to introduce them and get them into it. By 16 they have sports and other activities, girls etc but if they already love hunting and use to it they will make it a priority and look forward to it

I haven't had any problems with the ones hanging up in a tree for several years.
