Why is corn called Deer corn anyway? Is it filtered differently.. I grew up on a ranch and we used to laugh at places calling it deer corn.. corn is corn isn't it ? We used our crimped corn meal and the deer loved it .. but it wasn't great in regular feeders

I think it was $12.25/50lbs at the feed store in Hico on Saturday.

corn/soybean mix was $20/50lb.

Finally after several years of searching I found a lease for me and my family a couple of weeks ago. The lease is SW of Hamilton and I'm in Granbury so I haven't yet figured out where the best prices in the area are.

Because it is combined, dumped at a grain elevator, and hopefully run through a seed cleaner before being bagged as deer corn. And hopefully checked for aflatoxin and moisture before becoming deer corn. I like to see bags of deer corn labeled as " re-cleaned ". Because it is actually all cleaned by the harvesting combine.

Lots of the crop goes directly from the combine to the port facility where it is sold, eliminating the cost of going from the local grain elevator to the port

My 2 cents is it's a Sales pitch to get deer corners to pay more… lots of cattle / hog feed corn is cleaned before going in the feed rations .. we still laugh every time we see it ..I'm pretty sure Buckees doesn't check for the contaminant, it was discussed on here a ways back .. I'm sure most places don't check because there isn't much they can do at that point any way…. Anyway just curious if there was something special but really there isn't except guaranteed recleaning the corn..

Several midwest states got so much rain this year that planting wasn't done until much later than normal, I think IowaAg can speak to this.

Gonna delay harvest way past time that a lot of guys start feeding. High demand, low(er) supply.

If you buy the doe corn instead of the buck corn it's a dollar cheaper.

It was done initially to identify it to deer hunters when it was first marketed at convenience stores. Prior to that, shell corn was only available at feed stores or grain elevators. And modern combines clean grain so well I doubt it's even necessary to reclean it right off the turnrow.

Deer hunters have driven up the price of both shelled corn and cotton seed over the past three decades. Never mind the cost of pickups!

I broker grain that goes to two or three operations that process deer corn (mostly central texas spots but did sell some to Reus near Hondo, as I saw their name mentioned in earlier post) even with modern combines that clean much better than old ones, most deer corn guys are still cleaning the grain an extra time when it comes in. It also is tested for aflatoxin as well, plus bagged, so they are providing more service than just the farmer who stores his grain and then trucks it over to Sanderson farms for the chickens to eat.

Just straight field corn going for poultry consumption is bringing in the mid to upper $7s per bushel in central texas right now when you factor the basis in, which is even higher than this time last year. Basis is really high in the western corn belt right now so it looks like it won't be any cheaper to rail their corn down here, so I'd look for prices to stay high.

To the guy that locked in $8.85, you are one smart man, you're practically stealing it with todays prices, hope that place hedged some of that because unless they bought a ton early on at cheaper prices they're selling at a loss for what they've been buying it at the last few months.

September corn futures right now are hovering at 6.25. Here in The Panhandle the offer side of corn basis is around a +2.80 DLV into a Hereford Feedyard. So the feedyards are paying 9.05 per bushel and a 100k head yard goes through 625k bushels per month. When you account for the fact that you have to run deer corn through a scalper and bag it. What you are paying for deer corn is right inline with the market. Especially when they slap a $2 margin on each bag like they normally do.

Teamed up with nephews and bought bulk from farmer neighbor at $7.00/50#. Keep it stored in 55 gallon barrels at the farm-saves me trip to store but does require scooping it into 5 gallon bucket to dump in feeder.
