What's the secret to having a side by side with a windshield and not creating a dust vacuum to the rear seats?

So far my research is pointing to a vented windshield and rear wind screen…but also the possibility of pillar mounted vents. Any experience with any of these?

Can Am Defender max is the side by side in question.

I only used the windshield when it's raining or very cold. Dust sucks.

I had heard a rear windshield would help but I just tossed my windshield instead.

I haven't put a roof or a windshield on the Mule I bought this spring for this reason. The dust in the previous ones really bothered my eyes and the windshield would lay down but it was a vacuum for dust inside with the roof.

A rear screen similar to below will do the trick.

Never had any issue with dust but my seat is behind the wheel so no issue here. I mean, at some point people Put so much BS on these things that they should just buy a truck with a cab and air conditioning.

Rear screen or windshield is the answer.

Rain normally helps...

Back windshield or at least a screen will help, like in a convertible if you put a windscreen in back it changes the airflow inside the vehicle dramatically.

I have a vented windshield, bought on here from a poster. It's great and it's way better on dust than the standard ones but I honestly prefer no windshield unless it's cold or raining.

Venting the stock windshield on our Polaris ranger crew helps the front seat, but the back is still pretty miserable. I had the same experience in a friend's mule. You have to open the windshield all the way up when you have back passengers. That is the only good solution to your problem.

Get a windshield that allows you to vent or open all the way. Only time you shouldn't vent is in cold wet weather when dust isn't a problem.

Let me clarify that the need for a windshield is the result of the bruise on my wife's face in the shape of a grasshopper.

Driving slower is no fun. And not very practical with miles of dirt roads between properties

Either you were going 50mph+ or you misspelled pigeon

Lol no if you are going fast enough you can get some creative bruises from things you would have never thought about. We have a rule that if you plan on going fast you have to wear eye protection.

If you have enough land going slower is not an option, there is a reason we have a faster vehicle.

I have a half windshield on mine that folds down to 1/4 windshield.

No major issues from dust, fold it up when it iscold or raining and it provides enough protection to get by.

I dont drive fast hardly at all at the lease. Around the neighborhood i will cruise 30ish.

I have the half on my Maverick Maxx and have been completely happy until 110 and black top. That heat and 60 mph wind is worse than the cold. Wife after the last 2 mile highway drive to the stables agreed to a full windshield upgrade.

Windshields on side by sides are a net negative every time. It will ALWAYS create more discomfort and problems than it solves.

I don't know - it gets cold cruising in the morning on the way to a tree stand or a duck blind… even with all the right gear on, I always prefer the windshield and starting off my day warmer

Yeah, I never have any problems with dust up here on the South Plains.

Back windshield (removable in a couple seconds) and tilting front windshield that can be closed, or opens to two different fixed positions at the bottom. Works great on Polaris and would assume same for Can Am. Upgraded to the Polaris Northstar this year so dust will no longer be an issue (fully enclosed cab with heat/ac).

Selling my other Ranger in the classifieds now if anyone looking.

Alternate solution, gives her the protection she wants, eliminates the dust problem for passengers, since no windshield. Heck, cheap enough to have several for anyone who want/needs them. Just an idea.

Flip up windshield and a rear windshield will keep a lot of dust off, but when you slow down or stop it'll still roll up on you or suck in from the sides as you drive. SxS's are just inherently dusty, but they can also turn an hour long truck ride across the ranch into a 15 minute trip.

Here is a tip from someone that rents these, get the mounting brackets and a piece of fiberglass. Cut the fiberglass to shape. It is a lot cheaper than glass and doesn't break.

On a side note - how do you like that Defender? Thinking about buying one.

I really don't think there is an open air solution that doesn't cause a negative air pressure behind the wind shield at speed that will draw in and hold dust from behind the vehicle. It's a trade off.

You could always wear face shields or full helmets and keep stuff out of your eyes and nose and mouth at least.

I take the front windshield off during the summer. I bought a rear windshield and it makes the dust worse. Can Am Lonestar owner.
Drive slower.

Have had a Polaris Ranger and Yamaha Viking. We use them everyday and hard on the ranches. Bought a Can Am Lonestar Defender two years ago. Very quiet. Smoother riding than Polaris. No issues with it at all after two years.

I do use them where it gets cold.

Windshields still create dust suck. They still get muddied up and scratched up and reduce visibility. And they still create drag, trailering issues, and reduced gas mileage.

I wear a coat, gloves, and a face wrap in the cold…

I use mine on our ranch in the hill country and in the Ozarks in MO. I really don't have an issue with to much dust when I have it on but I seldom drive over 20 MPH due to the terrain on the ranches. When I ever tow it I simply take it off quickly as its quick disconnects... so no concern of gas mileage effects.
I also opted for the real tempered auto glass version instead of the cheap acrylic so don't get scratches but protected from the limbs and branches in the Ozarks.
We haul hunters from all over so I am trying to keep them as comfortable as possible.
Have used them both ways... with or without.
For my uses I have more advantage with than without.
I just don't use it as a go fast trail buggy going 45 mph on dusty trails....like all the UTV commercials show.

Man, not sure what some of you expect out of a SxS, and damn sure some of you go out looking for problems.

This is 2 weeks after a good cleaning. Dusty as hell out on the lease, probably 100+ miles on lease roads of caliche and dirt and another 100+ around the neigborhood.

Some dust on the dash, but not all that much and not unbearable, and the 1/4 windshield makes crusing much more enjoyable than going without, and it isnt even close.

As you can also see...not hard to keep it clean to avoid the safety issues that were brought up as well. Flip it up when it is chilly or rainy and keep on rolling without having to dress up like one of the Sand People on Tatooine.

I trailer it without any issues with the windahield and roof on, longer trips have been no problem.

But to each his own I guess.
