my neighbor had the good fortune of winning one at a raffle a couple weeks ago, he'll be picking it up to day - not very familiar with rifles at all, but is all-in now. what would the board suggest as the chevy 350 of scopes?

Depends on what rifle and the use. Hunting guns and bench guns are typically going to run different scopes.

If for hunting, I've got a Leupold vx5 3-15x44. Pretty solid and I'm happy with it

Yeah, really depends on the most common use for the gun. I have this on my 300 win mag, which is a bull barrel bergara bolt action for lefties. It's a heavy gun so I didn't worry too much about adding two more pounds to an already heavy weapon.

If it is a lighter / mountain gun, you'll want a lighter scope.
