We have them in front of our house in the Coastal Bend. They were here when we bought the place and we haven't done a thing to or for them. Came back after both hard freezes.

I planted two after moving into our current house, about 17 years ago. It took about 8 years before flowering. I was beginning to think they would never make it but they did and now produce multiple blooms each year. Did nothing special (maybe that's why it took so long for them to produce). They have proven to be very hardy, having survived two snow events and the winter apocalypse of February 2021.
People think I'm an idiot or something, because all I do is cut lawns for a living.

I had them when I lived in Arizona, they were beautiful. As someone else mentioned, they did not flower during first summer but then no problems after that. We had the red birds of paradise variety and the blooms would show up once it started to get to 95+. They definitely liked the heat.

ETA: other parts of town had Mexican birds of paradise, they bloomed earlier, usually once highs were in the 80s. What kind do you have?
