I'm traveling through Lockhart soon, and I'm not sure which is the best BBQ place. Y'all seem like the BBQ experts of TexAgs.

If it has to be Lockhart, then Kreuz. If you want better BBQ, then stop at City Market in Luling.

Try all of them.

City Market in Luling.

Blacks always had the best brisket. But I have not wanted to stand in the lines, so it has been years since I ate there.

Smitty's was my overall favorite. After John (Smittys grandson) left I was not as impressed.

Where are you traveling from and to? I'd argue the best bbq is not there although all of them worth the stop for the history alone

Is Kreuz the place where they tear off a huge piece of the brown paper and you use it for your plate???

Riley's is the new one in town, across the street from Chisholm Trail on the Southeast corner of hwy20 and 183. They are fantastic and if you come through on a Wednesday their smoked meatloaf is outrageously delicious.

Smitty's has the worst sausage I've ever eaten in my life at a BBQ place and nothing else stood out. Blacks is hit or miss on brisket, sausage is decent. Kreuz is probably the best overall, but nothing that will rock your world.

As others have said, if you're passing Luling on the way just keep driving past Lockhart

Interesting, because Smitty's and Kreuz use the exact same sausage recipe.

I've only had Kreuz in Lockhart and I thought it was very good.

If you want true Hot Gut sausage then Louie Mueller is the answer. True Central Texas German immigrant
hot guts.

City Market in Luling has gone downhill

Kreuz and Smitty's tatste the same to me, but Kreuz has a nicer building. They make really good sausage and ribs, brisket is good not great.

Black's is my favorite there. Brisket and sausage are outstanding. It's the only one I go to there anymore.

So I think we have gotten a best and worst vote for blacks, smittys, city market, and kreuz. I've been to city market and blacks. Both were very good. Honestly they probably all have good BBQ and from there it's just a personal preference.

Pick up some sausage to go from Blacks, sneak it into Smitty's (the original Kruez location, and pit), and get the brisket. Try Kruez if the local convenience store is out of sushi.

I prefer Blacks because I like the sausage and I've got a little nostalgia bias since i've been going there since I was a kid when my family would go through Lockhart on the way to my grandparents.

Funny about the TexAgs redirect to City Market, but it is good advice if possible. Very good BBQ.

OP, after hearing from all of the experts, I would like to know what BBQ place you're going to choose?

I would ask Beef Cheeks on the BBQ thread on the Food &Spirits board. He is with Leroy &Lewis and goes to all of the other BBQ restaurants across the state in his free time. He'll give you a fair and honest assessment

Had Smittys this last Sunday brisket and Turkey was good.

The Jalepeno Sausage was very greasy this time. We threw one whole link away.

At Smittys get the clod. Salt, Louisiana hot.
Pork chops when they have them.

They are all getting to be hit or miss. Chisholm Trail can be added to the list, and it is hit or miss as well.

I've eaten at all of them numerous times, and can't tell you where I would go on a one time passing thru event.

The most consistent place in the area is the HEB True Texas BBQ near Buccees in New Braunfels. It is by far the best and most consistent. And $12/lb cheaper than Louie Mueller in Taylor. Mueller is good but not worth the drive and second in consistency to HEB.

Wherever you end up, make sure when they go to cut it that it looks like what you want. If it doesn't, don't be afraid to ask them to cut it from a different piece.

Let us know where you go and how it was.

If you want a great burger, try Diesels out FM 20 east. It's outside and hot, but the loaded burger and sweet potato fries are great.

I've been eating at Kreuz and then Smitty's for 65+ years and have never eaten a slice of brisket, just clod.

City market is overrated.

Like the others have said, I don't think I have ever had brisket at Kreuz or Smitty's.

Only shoulder clod

My dad lived in Lockhart for around 5 years. Just about every time we went and visited, we hit up at least 1 of the places while we were there.

Here's my take. It can vary by day. The first time I went to Blacks, I had the beef rib and thought it was about the best piece of BBQ I'd ever eaten. Went back for one later on and it was nothing like the first time. A couple more times after that never was as good as the first.

I've had great, and also just ok brisket, sausage, and ribs at all 3 of Blacks, Smittys, and Kruetz. Overall, Kruetz was my least favorite of the 3 places. I enjoyed the sausage at Smittys the most by far. My favorite brisket generally was at Blacks, closely followed by Smittys. It just seemed I had mediocre stuff at Kruetz more than the other 2.

Never went to Chisholm.

Toward the end of his days there, we generally would go to Loop & Lill's Pizza instead. They had awesome pizzas and all the BBQ places had gotten more expensive and it just lost its luster.

Now he's moved back to my hometown right nextdoor to me, and we just make our own BBQ now.
