Getting rid of an old sailboat

TexAgs knows things, so I'm going to take a shot.

My dad has an old Hobie Cat sailboat that has been sitting in his barn for the past 35+ years. He has finally conceded that he needs to get rid of it. He had been holding onto it claiming that it was worth something and that he was going to sail it again. Well, I think he has finally realized his age and health aren't going to allow that to happen.

He wants it gone, so I'm hoping the OB can offer some suggestions. In a perfect world I think he'd like to donate it to someone that would want it, but realistically I think it is destined for the scrap heap. The trailer alone will likely need new tires, bearings, and lights just to be able to drag it down the road.

Any help with how to get rid of this thing would be greatly appreciated.

Craigslist.
I am always surprised at what I can see for sale on that site.

Sailboat sales group for Texas. I would check in there first, but likely going to be scrap unless the sails, hull, and lines are in good shape.

A ~40 year old Hobie with a working trailer and decent hulls, sails, lines, and rigging would be worth 1-2k or so. Replacing all that stuff likely costs more than it is worth.

If you painted it with some black rattle can paint and called it a "tactical sailboat" you could probably get 6k for it.

I contacted a friend who is helping with the RGV Reef to ask if they wanted a derelict sailboat for reef material. His response was "no fiberglass"

This is really the only acceptable answer.

East Bernard

Also, for the Boy Scouts or Sea Scouts suggestions, does the boat have to be sea worthy? Like I said, it hasn't left the barn in 35+ years, so I have no idea what the condition of the rigging, trampoline, or sails is.

Might also reach out to the TAMU sailing club (looks like it's been renamed the Aggie Yacht Club sometime in the last 15 years). At one point they had a number of old Hobies at Lake Bryan and Somerville and were always interested in donations that could be used for parts.

My uncaring son is making me get rid of my beloved Hobie Cat. I have such great memories on that Hobie and it makes me so happy to have it. So I'm going to show him.

Does anybody know a good place in Texas to buy a 45' Donzi?

This. We donated a 28' sailboat a few years ago to them. Needed some TLC but they were happy to take it.

Heres what I'd do man,

Go out there with your phone and make a video of it as best you can, Post it around to a couple places. Offer it up for bid and see what happens.

as is,

Where is,

You haul it away at your own conveyance.

The deal is done the moment buyer owned rigging makes contact with the boat or trailer.

You touch it, you own it.

Id send the video to some of those youtubers that buy stuff and restore it.

Stored in a barn for 35 years.

It's probably worth more than you think. Somebody will want it. Theres probably a subreddit of mfers that this specific thing is their hobby.

In whatever condition, theres probably not too many boats like it around in the condition that it is right now.

You find somebody on youtube or somebody that wants to make a youtube channel.

Your dad wont be able to sail it, but he can watch somebody else restore it and sail it.

Hell, he might end up sailing on it one day after all. You never know.

In any event, your Dad would probably enjoy watching it get restored and put to use.

That style of boat is popular all over the world. I can confirm that.

List it as a shallow draft bay fishing rig. Needs motor.

I would be interested if you can verify condition. It would be for scouts that's what I learned to sail approximately 30 years ago.

I likely won't be able to make it out there in the next week or two, but when I do, I'll add some pics.

ETA: I've been telling him he needs to get rid of it for years, but he has pushed back every time. Yesterday he randomly mentioned over lunch that he was ready to get rid of it. So now I'm trying to strike while the iron is hot.

With the way gas prices are going, this might be the best way to scoot around the bay.

Nothing that a little Flex Seal can't fix.

I rebuilt one just like this that was abandoned in a boat yard.

I cut down a tree inbetween the pontoons and changed the hubs/tires there in the sand. The rigging all had to be replaced and a new boom made (cut down from a larger boat). And a new sail made. There were some soft spots in the glass, but they were ignored
