Help with hunting ammo

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Heading to our place in Mason this weekend and would like to get a pig (or two) of good eatin' size. I'm planning to sit a tripod that's nestled in a large oak overlooking two ground-level water troughs about 50yds away.

I'll have my suppressed .300 blackout with me (zeroed at 50yds), but I'm stuck on which ammo to use. Here are my options:

  • Winchester Deer Season XP (Extreme Point)
    150-Grain
    1900 fps muzzle velocity
    1,202 ft.-lb. muzzle energy

  • S&B Subsonic FMJ
    200-Grain
    1060 fps muzzle velocity
    499 ft.-lb. muzzle energy

I know the 150-Grain XP would be my bullet of choice if I only had to make one kill, but knowing that I'm gunning for multiple medium size pigs (ear shots) I'm thinking of trying my subs with the hopes of getting more individual shots before the group takes off.

In the event of the group running away after the first shot, I'm hoping the quietness of the subs (compared to the supers) won't scare them off for the entire weekend.

What says the OB?

Those velocity spreads means you're not zero'd at 50yards anymore.

Also, one is 300BLK and one is 300 ACC Blackout. I'm not up to speed on those rounds at all but aren't they different rounds all together?

Sorry, should've clarified ... I was planning to zero based on whichever ammo I decided to hunt with.

Suppers suppressed is the right answer,

I believe they're both the same round just different description.

first choice. not a fan of subsonic 300 blk for hunting.

What ammo did you use to sight it in? I wouldn't use those subs without some practice with them to get used to the trajectory and then probably keep it within 50 - 60 yards. I think the 150s are on the heavy side of supers for 300 blk, so if you sighted it in with 120s, it would need to be checked to make sure you're still within reasonable limits on accuracy.

If you're taking head shots, it should not matter. I've found that the key to getting pigs to return is shoot them in the head so they die right away and don't run off wounded with the group, and shoot the sow first if there's a bunch of little ones.

Currently sighted in at 25yds w/ subs, but would re-zero at 50yds prior to hunt. And you're right, I wouldn't shoot any further than the 50yds to the water-troughs.

This was my thinking as well

I would use the Winchester Ammo

I also have a 300BLK suppressed and gave up on using the 200gr+ sub ammo years ago. Its good at close range but the drop gets ridiculous the further you get out and starts to limit your options when hunting.

Depends on a couple things... want to go ultra quiet and don't care if you get the pig on the ground quickly? Do the subs. Are you wanting to get some meat but not be as quiet? Use the Winchester.

I can only assume youre using an AR, If so, the action is going to make the most noise if you go subs. Given the two choices you listed, use the Winchester and hit them in the face. Ive had great luck with 205gr Sig subs made for hunting. I also have some Grind Hard boutique ammo but havent tried them as of yet but Ive seen the damage they can do. As for supers, the Barnes 110gr is the go to and is wonderful. Good luck and hit them in the face!

Head shots are great, but if you get into a situation where you're letting it fly after your initial shot and don't have as much time to aim, you're just going to be punching holes in them with FMJ. They're going to run off, maybe that's what you want so you don't have to deal with it, but my experience with FMJ is it's going to take a bunch of hits to take them down.

Going to have to agree with this one. What ever you shoot MAY die eventually, but its not a neck breaker, you may lose your animal, especially on bigger hogs.

You can't use the Winchester ammo because it's for DEER.

The Winchester deer season XP is all I'll hunt with out of my blackout. I can stack bullets on top of one another at 100 yards with ease. I've shot out to 550 yards with it as recently as two weeks ago, at steel targets. Extremely consistent shooting rounds, although some guns shoot different than others and prefer different rounds. I bought 4 boxes two days ago that would be my choice if I were you.

Subs over over rated for hunting. I've never shot a suppressed sub of any caliber where everything didn't immediately haul ass

YMMV, but we shot two blackbuck a couple of years ago within 30 seconds or so using blackout. When the first went down, they obviously jumped and moved a bit but didn't scatter like when shooting a boomstick.

I am planning on shooting Hornady 190g Sub-x for this soon. I like the ballistics of the round and hope it functions as I expect.

Just killed these hogs in Mason last night.

Btw I use 110 TTSX for my 300blk hog hunting. These I took with a .308 130gr Tac TX.
