I got a little anti-hunting flak for taking Alex to call in turkeys last week (even though the only thing shot was a camera) - so we did a little homework and made this into a video about how hunters are the ones fueling and funding conservation efforts.

Alex even interviews a wildlife biologist from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife.

Hope you like it. Feel free to share it anywhere that needs to hear a pro-hunting message.

who did you get flak from?

Some other local homeschool parents and some family.

Flak may be too strong of a word. They just made it clear they thought hunting was wrong and the video about turkey calling wouldn't be kid friendly.

It didn't discourage me from what we are doing. Just made me realize what the message needed to focus on.

We fished a creek today and saw a lone turkey hen, turkey poop and turkey tracks - Alex was thrilled about all of it.

Especially telling the sex of the turkey by the shape of its poop - male.

Well Done. The biologist did a good job too of putting a lot of that in kids terms.

I say it often here, but for as much as conservationists snipe at each other and even have different views on some things, they are allies far more than they are fighting. In the end they both want sustainable populations of animals and the land those animals need managed effectively.

And by the way, the excise taxes on hunting and fishing gear raise over a billion dollars annually now, I think Texas gets about 40 million of that to put back into conservation. One of the rare taxes that most people view as a success.
