Old family photo of a carriage ride with a horned goat. I was curious as to what type/breed of goat this way. Picture is from 1920s-30s.

I'm no expert on goats but it looks like an Angora to me.

My family had angoras around Leander in 20s and 30s. We have a picture almost exactly like that of my grandpa and great aunt. My pic would have been around 1934 to 1936

Angora Goat with goat coat. Wheels were different. I'm going to find it.

Thanks Ragoo.

- College of AG, that would be awesome. I believe this pic was taken in Corsicana in the early 20s, but it may have been 30s.

Used to show them as well. The one in the pic looks like its legs and forelock have been sheared. I have a similar pic somewhere of my dad, taken in the mid 1920's.

This is mine. Boy (my grandfather) was born in 1929. Aunt was born 1931. So maybe taken 1935ish...

This would either be around the ranch in Leander or north Polk County. They lived at both places until around 1937. They sold the limestone quarry and goat ranch around that time.

We would do a whole week end of shearing. Over a hundred or so. I smelled goat, tasted goat, breathed goat for a week later! My mom would make us strip outside before we could come in the house.

Nasty, dumb animals. Many ranchers made a lot of money from gov't price programs paid to Angora raisers. At one time, it was to ensure there was product available for military uniforms. But even when uniforms changed fabric, the price supports stayed.

Had another uncle who did sheep up near Bergheim. I had to help him also. Sheep make goats look like Einstein's.

Gunny, much respect toward you.

We bought our first flock of sheep from a family east of Abilene. They were bait for the coyotes so the angoras didn't have to deal with them. Out of necessity, those sheep kept quiet in order to survive. We never heard a sound out of them when we got them back home until the first one lambed 5 months later.

Yep. We would load ours up and go to my my aunt and uncles place. They ran their larger herd with Pyrs. Start Saturday at dawn and end at dark or into Sundays. The crew we usually had do the shearing (sometimes did it ourselves) came out of Junction I think. We'd stomp down those giant burlap sacks full of mohair. I hated those goats after a while.
