Starting from scratch, don't know anything at all. I've got 20+ acres out in the country. Yotes are a known problem (they eat my cats). Wanting for eggs at first, but want to eventually do meat chickens. What are the best resources to go to for a "Chickens for Dummies" education?

To learn how to raise chickens it would seem you just need to read a few pamphlets prepared by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and delivered by county agent Hank Kimball:

Kimball: What are you going to do with them?

Douglas: I'm going to read them.

Kimball: Why?

Douglas: I'm going to raise chickens.

Kimball: To be what?

Douglas: Well what do you usually raise chickens to be?

Kimball: Gee, I don't know. I never read the pamphlets.

A locally owned Feed & Farm store usually has good advice for first time livestock owners. The internet can get you paranoid about all sorts of things you don't have to worry about.

Ideal Poultry in Cameron, TX is Aggie Owned. I think one of them posts here from time to time. Not sure where you're located, but I'm betting they have some good info.

Laying hens are pretty easy. Get plugged into the local feed store and that probably all you need.

When you are ready to raise some meat birds, holler. I can help you out.

Trial and error.

Don't let them out if you have a nice porch or concrete covered area. They will crap on every square inch of it.

If you have dog or cat food out, they will eat every piece of it. Then crap a dog size nugget on your concrete.

They clean up scraps pretty good and I am sure you know where they leave the remains.

Information on poultry from Texas A&M (Poultry Link)

Lots of other information online, remaining poultry science departments that you might also check U of Arkansas, Auburn, Miss State, U of Georgia, and NC State in addition to TAMU. All the other departments merged with their animal science departments.

Also just ask here, lots of people with experience and I think several of us have degrees in POSC. I have a PhD in Poultry Science from TAMU so this is a subject near and dear to me. Unfortunately because of my job I can't keep poultry for biosecurity reasons.

Enjoy it, lots of fun and soon you might find yourself with more eggs than you know what to do with.
