Got a chance to buy one for $900. It was loved by somebody and used in the brush, she shows it, but that's likely what I would do with it.

Think it's a good price?

Depending on guage and condition that is a reasonable price.
If it is a 20 guage it is a steal. Sweet 16 double that price.

Seriously? Sweet 16's are "a dime a dozen" iny searches. Large supply/low demand.

Light 12's & 20's are a different story. Usually can find field grade pretty reliably for $1000-1150 depending on how patient you are.

Besides the 12/16/20 consideration, it depends on condition and choke. Stocks cut for a recoil pad or a chopped barrel with aftermarket chokes/compensators and the value plummets.

Condition is everything. Blueing wear and stock. From what you say.... $550 - $600.
Watch for cracks on the forearms due to recoil. Very common. If 1930 to 1958 vintage it should have a St. Louis Missouri barrel address. Many barrels have been changed out declines value.
Good luck.

Think more forearm cracks are due to incorrect forearm alignment rather than recoil. It's easy to misalign the lip in the forearm with the groove in the receiver when reinstalling after take down, and tightening up the magazine cap with the parts misaligned can cause the forearm to crack.

So can recoil according to collectors and it says that in reference books. I would say causes are from both perhaps. . Nevertheless it should be looked for when examining for purchasing, regardless of the cause.
ETA Great info. I learned something as usual.

$900 will buy a heck of a new gun for a brush gun. Way better than a 70 year old gun. Flame away.

100% agree. I have a 20ga that was my grandfather's and a 12ga that was my father in law's. The only reason to shoot them is if I'm feeling nostalgic. $900 buys so much better gun today it's not even funny. No way I'd pay that for an Auto-5 in dinged up condition

You won't find a better pump shotgun made today than an excellent condition vintage 870 wingmaster.
Autos have improved but certainly not all guns.

I'll take a 70s production Marlin lever action over any lever action made today also. Assuming they're both in excellent condition.

I'll fall into the older is better camp…give me a Belgium made browning A5 and I'll eat forever. Something about the old humpback just fits me well. Dad gifted me his…it was the last year it was Belgium made(1975). It's been through the ringer, cracked stock and replaced, thrown off 4 wheelers, dropped in the mud, etc…break it down, oil it up, shoot it…money. Killed many a birds. Every time. Will never sell it.

New shotguns are mostly junk. Made with cheap materials. Shoot them hard and they all break parts. Been there and still doing it. Get them good and dirty and most won't operate worth a damn. They might be lighter with less recoil but definitely not better.

I played with plastic guns when I was a child.
Belgium A5 is one of the best ever made.

I found this one useful as I think there was some variance between the serial numbers depending on when and where it was manufactured

Love A5s. Finally found a good deal on a nice Belgium made 20g last year. Almost bought another one a few weeks ago.

Is it a 12 gauge or 16 gauge? Rillos link is for 16 gauge shotguns. The link i posted is straight from Browning, but for 12 gauge A5s

Rillo's link will be your source. I'd be curious how many A5s were bought in the Great Depression
