Looking to buy a new safe for rifles and shotguns. What safe is the best value out there? I have approximately 20 guns that will be stored. Thanks for your advice!

Most of the retail "safes" you can find in local stores are pretty close to each other - I would buy on price first if buying one of those. For something better, yet still "value" I would suggest a Sturdy safe. Or if your just looking for something to keep the kids out of things a SecureIt cabinet (or 2 or 3).

Then don't get less than a 48-gun safe. The people that rate these also rate tents. They typically won't hold half of what they say they will

I have it on good authority that a 3 person tent WILL fit 3 people! Well, 3 Ukrainian women at least...

I'm looking to sell mine. It's a 64 gun safe; Liberty Fat Boy Extreme. I'm in Georgetown.

IF you're not a costco member I'd become a costco member and buy something like this: https://www.costco.com/bighorn-24-cu.-ft.-executive-safe%2c-70-min-fire-protection.product.11468049.html

Best reason is they at least deliver it to your garage at no extra charge.

I bought a Cannon safe from costco...safe and putting it in my garage cost me $900. Getting it from my garage to basement cost me $200.

Any of the 'off the shelf' safes like Cannon are going to be similar...good for keeping the smash and grab out, offer a little fire protection, and keep kids out, but they aren't going to withstand a professional criminal.

But the ones that do, like Ft Knox or Amsec, are gonna cost you a substantial amount more.

Graffunder safes are serious business…

All depends on your needs, budget, and how big you want to/can go (bigger is always better). Sturdy is probably the best value for your dollar on the market. AMSEC BFII is a good option (heavy gauge inner liner with poured fire protection liner and TL rated bolt works). AMSEC RF series is an actual TL rated "real safe" and not an RSC. Graffunder has the tightest gap tolerances (anti-pry) you can find and are tanks, but also pricy to get into the upper end models. Brown safes are good high-end safes as well. There are many solid options. Be sure to do your research and understand the RSC label vs real safes, fire ratings (real and made up), etc. and get the best you can afford. Also, bolt the sucker down!

I'm not so sure about this. I think the rating is basically based on skinny long guns with no scopes. So basically a bolt action rifle with no scope or irons. In that case, you have to figure out what you have and how many of them. I know my AR's, VEPRs, rifles with 40/50 mm scopes, all burn up two spots front to back on my safes that are stacked double deep.

I don't know about you or the OP, but my 10/22 is the only rifle I have without a scope. All of my other rifles are scoped

I pondered over this for a long time for no reason. I got an AMSEC, but unless you spend a bunch of money 10K plus for a real safe, all your getting is a storage container. Any thief with a thought out plan can get inside.

So unless you buy one that is rated for jewelry, just pick one and hope you only see smash and grab thieves.

Or make it harder for them. Hide the safe (false wall/dummy safe), instead of one big one, get two (more work for same prize), etc. Bolt it down.

If you get one, get those storage sticks that Velcro to a shelf and keep the gun standing up straight. Really helps with holding more guns.

In the grand scheme of things....they are all pretty much the same. Somebody with enough time and determination will get into one, no matter what sticker is on the outside. They are metal, can be defeated with the right tools and capabilities.

That being said....99.9999999999% of every instance, a run of the mill Cannon or Ft. Knox style gun safe (RSC for the hair splitters) will be more than you need. I'd focus on getting one that has the size and perks you want versus what texags says you must have in terms of brand.

Size - base it on what you think you will have in 10 years. Then go bigger if you can. Safes fill up, fast. Way faster than you imagine, especially if you have AR's or scoped rifles. Or your wife wants to commandeer a shelf (hint: offer her one, it's worth it for the lobbying factor).

Fire rating - highest temp is better than longest time. Houses tend to burn hot, but fast with modern construction materials. So go with higher temp rating over time.

Lock type - dial combo or digital. I wanted dial combo because, hey - it looks better and I'm a mechanical guy. Unfortunately when I bought mine, it was special order and I didn't want to wait, so I have electronic. I have zero regrets as it is easy to access and having watched my buddy fumble with his combo more than once, I'm happier with the electronic. Some still want the mechanical dial - so whatever works. But a good electronic is every bit as reliable as a combo. I'm on year 10-ish now and have had exactly zero issues with my electronic access.

Perks - last on the list. Your guns don't care if the interior is super plush felt or the cheap felt. Lights are great, but not a necessity and can always be added later if you want. Outside paint is nice and all, but it's just paint. Power outlet is nice, but not necessary either.

No matter what - bolt it to the floor, install it in a place that isn't super accessible if at all possible. Bad guys break into safes they can flip over and pry on. Safes that are bolted down and are in relatively inaccessible places make for much harder targets and will be things that bad guys don't mess with because they don't have the time, tools, or motivation and will seek out easier things.

Just curious, has anyone had a safe break in situation (meaning personally experienced this)? I have an academy knock off browning safe that was really just to keep the kids out when they were younger and in the house. Now it is just wife, dogs and me. Safe is on the third floor, not open to view unless someone went looking, and then good luck getting it down the stairs or rolling it over. So, if a thief can break security, make his way to the safe (which I would not expect he would know is there and doubt there would ever be an "inside job"), then by all means, go get it. Fire is certainly a different issue, but my guns are not as high on the list as all of the other stuff that would go up in flames...
