Anyone have one of these? Thinking about picking one up as a home defense weapon. I have had two Mossberg shotguns before and was happy with the functionality of both guns. We spend about 4 months in New Hampshire (an open carry state) but have to drive through Massachusetts and New York to get there. Carrying a Glock, an AR-15 and a handful of loaded 30 round magazines through these states makes me pucker a little.

They are shockingly good shotguns. I have two and have experience running a third that is a club " mule".

I put 500 rounds of mostly bird shot through one in 3 days. I had no major issues. Towards the end the pump action felt a bit rough but adding oil cleared it up. I fully disassembled the entire gun and found no abnormal or poor wear patterns.

Don't get me wrong it is a rough looking shotgun and some of the machining looks terrible when you see it disassembled but the wear patterns were fine after substantial use.

Here is a recent video showing how well it held up after huge amount of rounds put through it.

My dad bought one as a backup gun for a hunt. It would not feed for ***** He ended up spending $200 to get it working right. I guess it is now a $400 mossberg. I guess better than nothing.

I've got one I made into a home defense shotgun. Unbelievable value for the money. Would definitely buy again.

I have one I bought years ago. Nothing to look at, but it works. I haven't put a lot through it, but I've never had any operation issues with it.

I purchased the home defense version, but I wish they were selling the two barrel combos at the time. It is compatible with all the Mossberg 500 accessories and after-market products so you can modify it easily. Hard to beat for the price.

Get a Mossberg 500 or 590. You won't regret it. I love my 590.

Bought one 17 years ago for $137 out the door. I just keep it as a spare gun if someone shows up in town and doesn't have one. Never had a problem at all.

Yeah, it's not a Beretta (etc high priced shotgun), so you shouldn't waste your money (sarcasm).

Did I do that right?
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Good guns. Work horses. I will say that I do like and of the Turkish pumps at the same price but it's a coin flip really. The forends wobble too much on the mavericks to me but that me nitpicking

I've had a Mossberg 500 for 15+ years now, never had a problem with it feeding and it has taken a beating for sure. It's been a great backup gun

Pleasantly surprised. Way surpassed my expectations. Bought one for less than $200 around 2005 thinking I'd use it for one season... I ended up abusing the chocolate out of it all through college. Thousands of rounds through it as a dove and duck gun. Maybe cleaned it twice per season. Used as a boat paddle more than once..

Because of the price and zero emotional attachment I abused this gun carelessly, and it never failed me.

Finally, after about five years of hard use, the pump handle separated from its rods. I replaced it w an ebay aftermarket pump handle for like $20 and kept on going. I still keep it as a backup and have used it/ loaned it out at least once per season since then.

Additionally, the mid-sight makes this gun easy for anyone to shoot right out of the box. It's certainly not going to turn heads at the country club but it gets the job done. Its a no frills shotgun that's a little clunky, but it goes bang every time and drops birds.

As others have stated, it's a GREAT "working man's" gun. I have had one for about 10yrs and it has been treated like a redheaded stepchild since it is an inexpensive gun. I have put several thousand rounds through it and maybe cleaned it 3 times. It has only jammed once after a long season of no cleaning and cleaning it fixed that. Rub the pump rails with some jewelers rouge and it will slide like glass.

I have the 500 in 3.5 for goose , duck& turkey. It has been heavily used for many years. 2 seasons ago it lost a screw in the slide mechanism. I sent off to the Mossberg repair shop in Eagle Pass Tx and within 2 weeks I got an email from the shop that all work had been done and test fired and was sent back for free warranty work.
Last year I bought the 88 off of TexAgs knowing that it had gotten wet and didn't cycle. I sent to Eagle Pass and again I get an email in 2 weeks that the tech cleaned the slide action and shot the 88 with no problems. It was sent back to me free of charge for repairs. Mossberg is a good company.

Picked one up yesterday. Will post on new gun day thread after I take it to the ranch and put some rounds through it.

I've used it as a paddle, I've used it as a door stopper, I've used it as a dust gatherer....and in the last 20 years I've probably only cleaned it 5 times. It just works. Every time. If I pull the trigger it goes boom.
