Has anyone tried one of these? Our street gets hit by thieves breaking into cars about every six months. This last time around, they broke into my shop and cleared out my power tools, generators, etc. I can see them every time on nest cameras, but the footage doesn't do squat for catching anyone. Curious if one of these would help.

I would bet these thieves also use fake paper plates.

Damnit, you're probably right.

It might be cheaper to try a regular game camera first.

Think about how it's going to be used and keep in mind that the vehicle will need to be in view, up relatively close, and stopped in order to get a usable plate number from the camera. If it's a sunny day in broad daylight, you may have a little more forgiveness. Even high end commercial 4k cameras cannot capture a license plate on a vehicle unless it's stopped. They make license plate cameras specific for the purpose due to the nature of photography and physics.

It might work but it's generally my experience that when it doesn't work, it will be a time when you really need the information.

Getting the correct angle is the problem.

I live on a street with mailboxes at the end of each driveway. This is probably a dumb idea, but would it be possible to have a small camera installed underneath the mailbox (or on a nearby tree) facing the direction the road travels?

Assuming most thieves kill their lights as they approach the homes they're looking to hit, would it also make sense to install a secondary IR flood light close by that would also help illuminate the reflective license plates?

Our mailbox is at the end of our driveway in a limestone enclosure. I was going to mount the cam to that. And you're right about them cutting the lights. Same thing every time. I think I would be less angry if I just didn't see any of it, but watching the mf'ers on camera 20 feet from where we were sleeping...it just does something to me.

The best LP reader cameras are mounted in speed bumps.

As someone else mentioned above, thieves likely using fake temp tags. Also likely using stolen tags or even a stolen vehicle for their crime spree.

Put one of these in the shop with the speaker next to the bed. At least then, you can catch them in the act.

If you're in an area urban enough to have this problem then you're probably in an area where the cops won't do anything with the information you provide to them. It's a waste of money identifying the thieves if they can't be prosecuted.

Beat you can do is put trackers in your stuff and go get it back. Which isn't a good option either.

ran across the youtube the other day - guy catches videos of the guy who stole bunch of stuff and was in the process of putting trackers on some bait items but then runs across the vehicle and calls in the cops

Can anyone point me to a game camera that actually flashes? Like a visible in the dark flash. My thinking is if when they pull up to my gate & see a flash they may decide to leave.

Or they just see the flash and take your game cam as well.
