Has anyone in the OB tried their hand in making an antler chandelier out of whitetail antlers? The fiance is wanting one for our house and after taking a look at the at DSC this last weekend they are crazy $$$ high!! Kicking around the idea of trying to DIY one. Any advice...or antler donations? LOL.

If it's going in a big space get some elk.

That is the goal for my future dream of a trophy room. As for now I have to settle for a small one in the entryway. I am lucky I am getting this, my elk mount was booted out to the garage!

I have tried my hand on building them because of all the sheds we have off the ranch.
You will need long shaft drill bits. (18"). You look at the antlers and figure out the straight lines from curve to curve and you drill on those lines. ( If you plan on running wires for lights). By intersecting these lines (holes) you can pull your wires through them.
Attach the antler to antler by countersunk screws.
After you are done you can fill the screw heads and wire drill holes with stained plaster to match the antler.
I would suggest practicing on some old small sheds to get the hang of drilling you wire holes.

ETA. Their is a book that bass pro sells on building your own antler art.

I made one out of elk antlers a few years ago. I will say, there is a very good reason they are expensive to buy. It's a PIA, takes WAY more antlers than you think it will, and is not as easy as just slapping some sheds together. It's very easy to make one look like crap.

To get something that doesn't look like a 4th grader's art project, you need an equal mix of R & L sheds, and they need to be pretty similarly sized and colored. Matching is even better.
Plus; you will need to use some putty to fill the many holes and channels you will be drilling. I used Apoxie Sculpt, which is the same stuff I use to repair broken tines. So I already had some experience texturing, blending, and coloring. Your results will directly depend on your ability to invisibly cover your screw and wire holes. It's not that hard, just takes a little practice.

Lastly, there is a bit of an experienced eye needed to artistically put them together and have the end result be symmetrical and pretty. I had a friend help me at the beginning, and he really helped correct the hammered poo look I had going. He used to work in a shop building these.

That being said- the following link is similar to the guide I used, but is much newer with better pics. Instead of the bulb holders with the plastic sleeves, we used sections of antler from ones that didn't make the cut. Just recessed the bulbs in an antler base, made for a much cleaner finish. Blending them to the antler main beams was a bit of a chore, but well worth it in the end.

Read it and get a solid idea of what you are getting into. Be VERY selective on the sheds you choose, it will make all the difference in your symmetry. I would think you will likely need to find a shed supplier who has a bunch of similarly sized matched pairs.

Thanks guys! I'll look around and see if I can track down enough matched sheds. If I decide to give it a go I'll document it all on here so y'all can see the art or catastrophe…whichever it turns out to be!
