I know it's a long shot…but if anyone has one, or knows of one that would be willing to sell, please let me know.

Happy New Year OB!

Two summers ago I spent a few weeks with my dad @ the Baylor S&W hospital in Waco, and for a break, I'd walk over to the Cabelas next door.

To my surprise they had 3 of these rifles in the used/clearance rack. I asked why, and the guy there said Barrett tried too hard to optimize action length for weight savings and a significant number of the rifles struggled to consistently feed or something like that. Also high twist rates and pencil barrels are bad Idea.

They were marked $1199. I put it down and moved on. Maybe the guy was FOS, who knows

Mine was in 6.5 creedmoor and shot great. First 5 shot group was .7" if memory serves, trigger was amazing, and of course it was very very light.

Only issue I had was the bolt would bind if you put too much off axis force on it. Not an issue often and never reared its head while hunting. Ended up selling to scratch the itch of making a rifle my own and went with a Tikka.

I'd say the fieldcraft is an amazing off the rack, super lightweight rifle for hunters, and they have a much better reputation for accuracy than Kimber's offerings of the same ilk.

The main reason I'm after one is for the weight and accuracy. This will be a mountain pack gun for mt goats, sheep, elk etc. I have heard great things about the rifle and how well it shoots.

As FIDO mentioned I have heard one account where someone complained about the action. A risk I'm willing to take I guess.
To your point I don't want to venture into Kimber's gun in the same class, way to many issues from the research and first hand accounts I have talked to.

I may have to look in a different direction since Barrett has halted production of the Fieldcraft line to service govt. contracts. But nobody that I have found has made a rifle with the weight, accuracy, quality compared to the Fieldcraft.
Open to suggestions if anyone has them.

The guys @ Alamo Precision make some really light rifles using Proof carbon wrapped barrels, but $$$$$

If you've got the scratch for goats, sheep, and elk, you've probably got the scratch for a custom build. Titanium action, carbon barrel, featherweight stock in your favorite color, topped with some primo glass, and you're miles ahead of anything Barrett rolls off the mass production line. It'll be pricey but it'll be yours forever.

The Tikka T3X I bought in .308 is a really light rifle. I have about 20 rings through it, but I've been pretty happy with the accuracy on it. The action is also super smooth. I need to upgrade the sling on it before next season.

But is it truly worth it..?!…..Maybe it is if they have my favorite color!

My goal is to get a 5lb or less rifle with no glass, with glass be around 7lbs.

Have you considered the Sig Cross in .308?

Super light, foldable stock, very accurate.

Also comes in 6.5 CM and .277 Sig Fury

Sub 5 is not gonna be easy to do. I agree with staying away from Kimber as well.

Off the shelf look at the Weatherby Mark V Backcountry models.

It is tough to do…but it can be done. That's what led me to the Barrett.

I've checked out the Weatherby, I could be wrong but when I was looking into them you had to go through their custom shop to get a .308. Still a tad heavier than the Barrett but a good looking gun nonetheless.

If it was a pound lighter and a little less tacti-cool I'd think about it.
Thanks for the option and response though.

You guys are costing me money. I've been down the rabbit hole this morning on Terminus Zeus actions and Proof Research prefit barrels. Now looking at stocks. This could add up quickly.

Trying to figure out if the Apollo/Ti action accepts the Zeus barrels

Defiance titanium has a plug & play option with proof carbon.

If you want a project, my rem model 7 260 in progress is at 5.725lb in a wildcat composites stock (no pad, bondo, bedding or paint yet), with talley lightweights and an old bushnell banner. I think it'll be right at 5lbs without scope when I'm done. You could spend a couple hundred more bucks and save weight on the stock. Plan is to eventually rebarrel with heavier profile/fluted
Kimber 84m action/barreled action is also a good place to start
*project for you to find/ start, mine isn't for sale

Watch those rabbit trails on accurate light weight rifles.....Mine turned into getting an 07FFL, equipping a shop, going to school and building my own.

OP, my suggestion if you want a 5.5-6# rifle (no glass) you should consider a titanium action, Proof carbon fiber barrel, McMillan carbon fiber stock. Titanium actions used to be 3-4x the cost a stock / non-blueprinted Rem 700 action. Now things have changed a bit. Many more Ti options. Lonepeak Arms Ti actions are really nice. My builds using blueprinted stainless steel actions and Proof CF barrels average 6.5# with every component weighed / catalogued. A titanium action will save you 6-8 oz. There are lighter rifle stock options (true sheep builds) out there with the weight savings coming in the form of less substantial design (which I personally don't care for). You can save even more with a shorter barrel and a short action (since you specified a 308 Win).

I went with a 7mm STW for my long range mountain gun. I've got kills of 700 yards on Wyoming Elk and 749 yards on NM Mule Deer. Lots of down range energy, minimal recoil and a ton confidence with this one.

Keep us posted on your decision and future hunt success!

This is the fieldcraft's biggest draw, my understanding is they bought the ip and molds from nula so they could start mass producing them, as they were one of the most sought after lw stock designs out there, and they built a ss replacement for the clr action. They also made the 22-250 (and maybe 243 too?) in fast twist. Just really well thought out rifles

Never had feed issues with mine, and there are zero problems with the twist rates and light barrels.

They are very hard to find and people are asking a premium. I sold mine for $300 more than I paid. I'm very happy with my Tikka in a new stock (vanity, the original stock with some foam taped on the butt to raise the comb and a vert grip insert is goodness) for a 1lb weight penalty.

You nailed it, that's why I'm really drawn to that particular gun.
It may be crazy to some, but I love the way the Fieldcraft looks. It has everything it needs to be a solid rifle and nothing more, even if the design isn't up to snuff as other guns in its category or custom guns. I don't need kuiu paint on my rifle stock. No offense to guys that like that, it's just not at the top of my list.

In a perfect world I would find one in .308 with an 18" threaded barrel and put a Kahles scope that I already have and be done.

I'm not necessarily opposed to going the custom route, but to my point is it really worth it so I can get stock with my favorite color on if?! Ha
I know there are a lot of people that make great guns…but even the Alamo Precision guys lightweight gun is coming in at 5.5lbs and it cost twice as much as the Barrett. If I'm paying twice as much I want it to meet the weight of 5lbs or less.

CowDoc, I would love to do what you did and build my own…but it's simply a dream that wouldn't come to reality I don't have the time that is needed to spend going down that rabbit hole. Hopefully I'll be posting some good pictures in October, Mt goat is on the menu!

Also if anyone stumbled across said Fieldcraft in .308 with 18" barrel….Remember me!
In the mean time I'm still exploring more options.

Will do. Should you decide upon exploring alternatives, I have a Rem 700 titanium in 270 WSM that I've had for a long time that I'm considering selling.

I'll keep you posted on my progress.

After the past couple years of ammo being scarce, I've decided to make .308 my go-to. It's treated me well in the past and I haven't touched my other rifles in a long time. You can find .308 in a pinch almost anywhere which I like. Will it be this way forever, probably not. But right now that's my thinking.

I have a .260(one of my all-time favorites), 6.5, 7 wsm that hardly ever move.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Man I'd be eyeing that 700ti 270wsm as your goat rifle if it were me. Put it in a fiberglass stock and I'd bet cowdoc already has a load worked up...

Must be nice to be sub 10% BF where you have to start worrying about ounces on your rifle and not your waist.

I'm still just waiting for Barrett to release the LH version of the fieldcraft, which will probably never happen. Some folks suggest the Tikka T3X Superlite. Sportsman's Warehouse has an exclusive model that is at 5.9# stock.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
The saying goes that a pound on your feet (heavy boots) is equivalent to 5 on your back. If that's true i would say a pound on your rifle is at least that, probably more.

Pierce makes a LH ti action, believe borden does too

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I may be sub 10% BF….but it doesn't mean I'm in shape! Currently working on that problem as much as I can.

As mentioned earlier, ounces add up to pounds and pounds add up to a pain in the you know what. Every little bit helps.

I'm not giving up the search for a Fieldcraft but also being realistic that I can't wait forever.

I've got a Fieldcraft in 30-06. I built a custom 30-06 for the mountains and sold it off because I like the Barrett more.

Good like finding one. I see them occasionally on Rokslide. You can still buy NULAs as far as I know. A guy in sheep camp had one chambered in .270. It was nearly identical to my FC.
TxAG-010
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I try and keep tabs on Rokslide probably not as much as I should.

Good to hear you like your Fieldcraft, I've heard too many say the same thing.
Here's to hoping.

HA. I saw that earlier….tempted to see of he'll sell his .308 he says he's keeping.

Thanks for the thought and heads up!! Much appreciated.
