Son and his friends came in with a bucket of these they dug up in the green belt. What exactly are they called? Ok to eat?

I would feed to the friends first in case they are poisonous. Won't be any skin off your back.

too many poisonous bulbs out there to mess with. Those dont look like the wild onions i have seen in Tx, and i would be more worries about Rain lily, spider lily, etc.

Edit to add from article above:
Dangers: Rain lilies (Zephyranthes stellaris) look identical to wild onions and can be fatal. Crows Poison (Nothoscordum bivalve) plants also look just like wild onion and may cause upset stomaches. Only wild onion smells like onion. If it smells like onion it is safe to eat, if it just smells like grass it's Rain Lily or Crow's Poison.

I think I will stick with the 20 cent onions from the store.

Hmm. I've been eating the wild onions that grow in the wet weather creeks out in hill country for years. Glad they are actually onions... Had no clue and those

With the wild onions, they have a smell of onion so strong you can smell it from above the ground. They resemble shallots with tubular leaves.

I want to point out that I googled "Texas wild onion" and that image came up.

I make no validity to the statement of fact that it is or is not a "death camas"

You can definitely smell the wild onions and have only picked them in the spring.

Wild onions always have tiny bulbs.

Imagine what those high fenced ones look like.

I've never seen wild onions with bulbs that big... I would be very hesitant to eat those.
