Bringing fishing poles to vacation

We go down to a resort in Costa Rica on vacation most years. I never get a chance to go on a guided trip, but there's a public but secluded beach someone told me about a couple of years ago. Last time we went I brought along a cheap, collapsible pole that I could fit into my luggage. I caught countless, huge lady fish in the surf, which was fun. I was trying to hook up with a Rooster, and I eventually did. It hit a top water and once it realized there was a hook in his mouth it turned towards me, scared me half to death, then turned back out and never stopped.

Anyways, I was hoping to bring a couple of my better poles next time we go. What's the easiest way to do this? Just ship them to the hotel? Is there a company like shipsticks (golf) that does the same for poles?

It will cost a little money but it's better than shipping stuff- look into getting something like the 4pc St. Croix Triumph Travel rods

St. Croix Triumph Travel

Temple Fork Outfitters has some good stuff in this category too: TFO Traveler Rods

I travel with fly fishing gear all the time but those are all typical 4pc rods (occasionally 2pc) and carry on easily. Before I fly fished I would use a Plano Rod Tube that could be locked and check it with my luggage so that's an option too.

get a couple of two piece rods and carry them on - I do it all the time and they never count them as a carry on for some reason. Save the $ on shipping and look cool in the process

Edit: obviously 4pc is better (smaller) but if you are looking for salt spinning rods (not fly) I would go 2 piece
I love TFO's stuff and those 3 piece rods look like the best of both worlds

Sorry I wasn't clear....I do flyfish but mostly freshwater. Was talking about conventional poles.

My advice was for conventional rods. Both St. Croix and TFO make good travel rods that break down into 3 or 4 pieces that can easily be carried on or stowed in checked baggage.

Yeah I'll probably end up doing that. Was hoping not to have to buy a new rod but then again this is a valid excuse to shop around. I find myself needing more and more of those.

Good deal, thanks!

Those St. Croix travel rods aren't near as much as I was expecting them to be. Thanks, Tarpon

Another option is to bring a reel and just buy a decent rod once you get down there, use it for your vacation and then donate it to the locals when you are done. I've done this a time or two.

shipping anything to CR is extremely costly and very slow. You will save money just buying new rods to take as carry on. What part of CR? I have family in the Jaco area that does property sales/mgmt. I'm heading down on 12/26. Hoping to watch the Ags on New Years Day beachfront!

Probably 6 of one, half-dozen of the other. However, it appears the TFO rods are sold out. Can't go wrong with St. Croix. I have a handful of St. Croix conventional rods- hard to beat their Mojo Inshore line when it comes to bang-for-your-buck. I also have a couple St. Croix fly rods but IMHO, their fly rod game has been lacking the last several years. I don't have any TFO conventional rods but I've fished them with a guide when taking my boys and they're good rods. Especially for the money. When it comes to conventional gear I think people overthink rods way too much.

And @Skillet Shot - tenkara is for people who can't fly cast.

That's awesome. We always fly into Liberia and go to Guanacaste peninsula.

Haha I'm a spincast live bait guy. But my uncle had a tenkara at a family reunion and caught a bunch of bream and sunfish on a tenkara in the bayou by our cabins. Seemed pretty fun and they have a good deal going on. I'm definitely far away from the hardcore fly tying catch and release "sportsman" that uses $2000 fly rods.

I have used a rod bazooka to carry my one piece rods up to 7'. Airlines generally charge fishing equipment as 1 bag which includes Rod, tackle box/ gear bag/ net . Only issue I had was a Rod tip got broken because TSS cut my lock off and pulled rods out / broke it shoving it back in . You can carry more than one rod that way

I'm a big fan of the Okuma Nomad traveler rods paired with a Penn Battle II 2500 or 3000.

We take these with us all the times to SoCal for surf or pier fishing

I have an Eagle Claw travel rod that is probably 30 years old. I bought one as a gift for my dad and liked it so well I bought another for myself.
