We currently have a gas firepit in our backyard, I can't stand it.

What are y'alls experience with the "smokeless" firepits like Solo Stove and the likes? Do any of y'all have them, like them, dislike them?

My buddy has the Solo Bonfire and Yukon and likes them.

We have a solo stove. It puts out very little smoke as long as you keep it clean (get rid of ash that can accumulate at the bottom). The kicker is it doesn't radiate much heat outward. The heat goes up. Since we live in the burbs, we like it since we're not putting out a lot of smoke and we can walk up to it to toast our buns if needed.

This

We love ours

As long as the ash is cleaned out and the wood stays below the Rim, you'll only get smoke for the first few minutes.

I agree that it doesn't put out a lot of heat to the sides but it will melt your face if you stand over it.....taller camp chairs are helpful

Another option is to get a well designed chimnea.

Good ones can really kick out heat from the "mouth" while the smoke goes out the top.

Finally, there are some YouTube videos where you can build your own smokeless fire pit relatively cheaply. Keys are bottom ventilation from the outer ring and top ventilation from the inner, metal ring.

I guess that is why most of the "smokeless" firepits are all 14-16" tall...

I have a BioLite and Solo Stove. We use the BioLite when we travel and it doubles as a grill/griddle…and cell phone charger.

It puts out heat on the sides more than the solo, but for a patio setting Solo is legit.

I recently bought a brio. We've used it twice so far, but really like it. They are a bit heavier than the solo stove.

Wife got one of the smallest Solo Stove models for a corporate anniversary gift last spring. We used it a bunch camping this summer. For a grill/stove/fire pit the size of a coffee cup that thing will rip some heat out the top. At that size the high insulation value on the sides is a benefit so less on point to the discussion, but it does burn pretty clean.

This one is double edged in Texas for ambiance versus heat.

I have a Solo Bonfire and have learned build a hot ass fire and it will kick out plenty of heat out to sides as well. I spent a couple years thinking it only puts heat up and with us standing, not sitting, around it when we wanted heat. I'm guessing mountain west guys never fathomed southerners only throwing 2-3 logs on to tell buyers you need a strong fire to radiate heat out to the sides.

I have a Solo Stove Bonfire, and wouldn't buy one again due to the difficulty in emptying ashes (unless they've changed the design). Poor design…they welded the perforated plate that the wood sits on to the inside, instead of letting it just sit on a rim. The ash falls through the holes into the space between the perforated plate and the bottom. To empty the ash, you have to turn it over and dump it out, banging on the bottom. Shop vac doesn't work because suction is broken by bypassing air through the perforations around the vac nozzle. If I was buying again I'd buy a Tiki or other brand.

I have the solo stove ranger. Three of my buddies have gone out and bought their own after enjoying mine. As others have said, most of the heat goes up not out. Yes they are smokeless. The secret is a second set of air vents at the top of the pit. More oxygen gives a clean burn. Mine is the smallest version so it will not hold standard logs. I have found places that sell smaller sized wood specifically for the solo stove ranger so this is not a huge issue. My FIL had a smaller one and then upgraded to a big one for his 40 year gift from his company.

They work well if the fire is hot enough. In order to keep the fire hot you need to feed it, a lot. It burns through wood very fast.

This! Three neighbors have solo stoves, and not much heat when it does get cold. We found a cast iron chiminea and once it is going the smoke goes straight up and it can throw the heat. It is heavy, but they make cast aluminum as well. You can separate it and grill on it but we never have. The best thing is that if you roast a marshmallow over the top they never catch on fire.

We got a Solo Bonfire two months ago. Have used it at least 4x a week since. Love it. Really does reduce smoke. And, they just came out with a grill/griddle accessory. Perfect for the back porch and to take it camping.

Nothing beats the heat and ambiance of a good fire pit where you can move around it and not stand in the direction of the smoke.

My neighbor has a smokeless one and it's like watching a silver crockpot on fire inside it.

Doesn't sound like a pellet grill at all. How exactly do you figure?

We have a Yukon and a Bonfire. The smaller goes camping with is while the Yukon is great on the patio.

Some people have started making heat deflectors to radiate the heat outward, I'll be ordering one shortly.

It's really nice being able to enjoy a fire and not smell like smoke.

I like my propane fire pit. Instant on and off, tons of heat, propane is cheaper and more consistent quality, and 0 smoke.

I just bought this one. I get it on Monday and will give an update once we use it a few times.
