Tank Top Sunflower Heater: Combustion in heater behind burner

I have a couple of dual burner tank top heaters. Like many others, have had to replace thermocouples before. No biggie.

However, fired up one of them today, and after about 4 minutes of running, one of the burners made a low pop sound then started to rumble and the flame at the face of the burner looked a little low and made a low howling sound. Let it go for a minute more and shut it off. Let it cool, then fired it up again and the same thing, but let it run a couple minutes and notice the black, back side, of the burner started glowing red hot. Looks like combustion is happening in the burner housing.

What would cause that, and is is fixable?

TIA

I gave up the ghost on those awhile back and feel a lot better about my Mr. Heater Buddies.

Use those for the hunting cabin. My dual sunflower heaters are for the patio. I have tried many others, but the sunflower tank tops work hands down better than anything else. When they work, of course.

Sounds like you've got what you like, but these, from the link, are the tits.

At $200 for the first one, and $420 for the second, the "tits" should be included and come dancing around me on the patio as I light those. All while I smoke my cigars, which is why I have the heaters to begin with. That being said, if the "tits" magically appear when I light them, I'll buy a lot more cigars and beer, because I'm moving to the patio if that is the case.

Its usually rust and scale blocking the throat to the burner. There should be a wingnut you can unscrew and remove the sunflower part. Bang it on something solid and you'll see the crud start to fall out. Keep banging it until nothing else falls out.... or use compressed air to blow it out.

Thanks Shelton98.

Tried it yesterday, and never saw anything come out, but it works on the 15 minute test, when it was melting down a 4 prior to.
