a friend of mine is going through a nasty divorce. Long story short she bought a liberty safe from cabellas with a digital keypad lock. Her ex husband set up the combo and now won't tell her what it is. She has a dozen guns and a bunch of cash in it.
Is there anyway to get the combo reset without opening the safe? Any other way to get in the safe?

A lot depends on just how fun this safe really is.

Wait. She didn't know the combo when he set it up or he changed it to something she didn't know?

Getting into a fun safe without the combo. Isn't that what dating apps are for?

Rule #1. Damsel in distress.
Move the safe as is to a safe location. Pun intended.
Pay a pro to open it. If in Houston area, Safeco is in Atascocita on fm 1960. Good guy there.
Other one in the woodlands I think.

Put a ring on it.

That's how I got into my wife's fun safe.

If the first, WTF?

If the second, no reason to get into it, it's empty.

A cheap safe is surprisingly easy to get into. Remove the handle and take a cutoff wheel and cut a giant X across the entire face of the door. Use channel locks to peel back the door pieces, and you'll see the metal rods that go from the handle to the flat metal the pins are attached to. Cut the rods close to the handle and pull towards the center, the pins will recess and the door is unlocked.

There's very little safe about any of this.

A demand letter from her attorney could get the combo.
Something to the effect that he is liable for expenses occurred to open the safe since he won't provide combination.

Many people set a custom combo but don't delete the factory code.

Works better with the grainier old school displays. High resolution killed this one...

Is he also liable for the guns that aren't in there that she probably didn't know about in the first place?

You don't even need a grinder. Cordless cold cut metal saw:

This is why it's pointless to buy a $1000 safe other than to keep the kids out of things.

Go to the sturdy safe site and watch videos of how they destroy safes.

I'm not much of a safe expert but wouldn't some of these methods that cut the door run the risk of damaging the contents?

OP needs to come back and deliver on what was inside once it's open.

A grinder is much cheaper at $40

.
The door is the strongest part, don't cut the door go for the back or sides
The Fife

Wouldn't there be the same risk with going through the back or sides, or would the gameplan be to cut along the edges and remove the entire side?

This is why one should bolt their safe down to the floor. The bottom IS the weak point. It's already got holes to start using a recip saw, and the metal is usually thinner as well.

As for the "Fun Safe", nobody's thought that maybe EX hubby has some evidence of "fun" that he does not want shared or found, and that's really why he is not divulging the code? ( yes, I know it was a typo, but question still applies. This will require updates by the OP).

If the divorce is still ongoing just wait until it is over and the assets are divided. Breaking into a safe to take marital property isn't going to make them look good to the judge.

Depending on which liberty safe it is, you could also easily get in to it with a long pry bar. Or you can also go to the option of getting a safe smith to come out, that option allows you to set a new combo and still utilize the safe!

If you cut the outer face of the door, the inner face of the door would still be protecting the contents from damage when you pulled the rods to open the safe. I think it would work. Seems like the demand letter would be easier.

Today I learned about how the front door works. The closest thing I've messed with are those fireboxes that supposedly keep papers from burning for X minutes. They're not exactly hard to break into.

Keeping your spouse from accessing marital property doesn't exactly look good either.
The Fife
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That's what I was thinking but at the attorney level. If he's effectively hidden marital property away I'd imagine his lawyer would want him to open it up because that wouldn't exactly fly well if it went to trial.
