Looks like orange zexmania. Cross check me on google and see if it is what you are seeing. Hard to tell from your pics. Deer will browse it and quail will eat the seeds.

I am skeptical about orange zexmania.
It looks like it has white flowers?
Also, try an app called "picture this"

Not zexmenia (which has yellow flowers)
OP you need some close up pics of leaves & flowers.

Thanks for the input. I'll see what I can do about a better pic.

The "flowers" on the plant in question are dried out, grayish-white seed pods that have opened from what I can tell.

its scary how accurate that thing is. to date, its only gotten one wrong for me and that was a young grapefruit tree it thought was a lemon.

Just pulled it up on my computer, I had previously looked at it on mobile. 99% sure its Orange zexmenia (Wedelia texana). Like the OP said the gray spots are dried seed heads.

I like it but I double check it. I've found it helpful to take pics of a couple of different plants and parts of plants of the same species. The results aren't always consistent but I can usually tell which result is truly the plant I'm looking at.
