Obviously bags should be custom tailored to specific needs, but who have "Go Bags" or "Bug out Bags"? What do you think are priorities to have in them.

Here's a list I had started before.... I know I added more to this but this was the last that I could find on it.

My questions are where are you going to go? Is everybody else with go bags going to the same spot and will there be enough food resource? My play would be to team up and form a small militia wherever you go for one, so you have some defense capability. Two, needs to be a place with enough short-term food source for your small militia to get a longer term food source in the works. The world is so populated now, it'd be really freaking hard to hide for very long. Maybe in the far norther reaches of canada?

Trying to go anywhere in the USA, with metroplexes of millions all having the same idea....better be ready to stand up and fight. There will only be short term hiding / survival.

I hesitate to suggest adding a mask...but here's my thinking: some places might not let you go in without one (obviously), but the bigger benefit is that you could wear one anytime in the next few years and not look out of place. And wearing one could help prevent people from recognizing you - including facial recognition software. And they weigh next to nothing.

Man, unless the signs are there, or you are a spy/covert operator, pre-packed 'Bugout Bags' seem like overkill.
Unless ya are religious about inspection/maintenance and rotation of stuff, ya are more likely to either find what ya need missing from your pack, or expired/inoperable.

That being said, you should be able to put one together in a short amount of time if needed.
i.e. keep whatever you would need for buggin' out (or going camping) well organized in your house, and have a list of what ya think ya may need.

Have a list of what ya need to pack.
Have a plan of where ya wanna pack it to.
Have realistic expectations, and evaluate your options before walkin out the door.

A vehicle/get home bag is a lot more practical for most people:
Light jacket
Change of Socks
Change of undies
FAK
duct tape
cash
baby wipes
snack'ums

Also recommend walkin shoes and water, but those are in the trunk next to the bag, not taking up space in my Hello Kitty Jansport.

Weapons should be on you already, if ya choose to carry them.

In regards to overkill, I have them set up for my wife and I due to hurricanes. After watching Houston meltdown during Harvey, even she was encouraging of it. These aren't a true SHTF scenario but a real world situation where things can be rather unpredictable. In the last day before a hurricane hits, it can easily shift angles and hit an area that was earlier not thought to be hit. Plus, with the store, I don't want to just bail out of here unless necessary.

I don't really expect a SHTF scenario to really happen that fast to where a BOB is necessary, but hurricane.... yeah, seen it happen even though we weathered the last storm very nicely.

Now, what do I have in our bags? Change of clothes, some containers for storing things we need to grab quickly and still keep dry, a small amount of food and water and protection. These are more quick evacuation bags than SHTF but would be a leg up on SHTF though not as thorough as a traditional BOB.

Agree 100% on evac bags/plans, and maybe I'm getting too hung up on the parlance of "Bug Out Bag", and the negative connotations it can conjure up. I always imagine a $500 Eberlestock (probably never adjusted or fit to the person) stuffed like a pinata with an incomprehensible mix of Arcteryx, Great Value, and mountain house meals, that the person realistically has no idea to use, and overloaded to the point that the person can't carry it further than their mailbox without gettin a blister on their foot.

For evac, don't discount documents. You are only who you can prove yourself to be.
All our 'life' documentation (birth cert, marriage cert, house/vehicle docs, DL's, passports, transcripts, resumes, etc) are backed up on a cloud server, and I keep the same info duplicated on a couple of small thumb drives as well.

Not only do I use to that as a small, minimally invasive, hedge against the unknown, but it also helps us when we need those doc's for whatever purpose, and I don't have to go digging through the safe and scan the doc each time its needed.

I'd consider adding a small portable solar charging panel and a rechargeable battery pack to keep cell phones and other electronics topped up.

Definitely add a Fenix CL23 Lightweight Camping Lantern, a box of Propel/Crystal Lite/etc packets, some Off wipes for mosquitoes/bugs, a poncho and liner. The lantern and poncho liner were invaluable during the freeze when my wife and I were in Port A without power and when I went to our ranch to break ice for our cattle when it was out of power too.

My BOB is really more of a SHTF bag and I have a smaller get home bag. I have everything I think I could ever need in my SHTF bag, it's honestly to heavy to carry if I had to resort to hoofing it more than a couple of miles. My get home bag has some duplication but I can pull what I think I need from my bigger bag if I ever have to get the hell out of Dodge or run away from Zombies on foot.

ETA: I'd encourage you to try your Wise food or anything else you pack first. I sampled around and the Mountain House we had got us through those 5 days with some relative enjoyment. Also consider something like cards, a book etc to pass the time. We found out couple time, while fun got harder to enjoy as the layers of clothes increased when the temperature dropped to upper 40's in our place in Port A and lower 40's in our ranch house even with a Hunting Buddy going.

Really like this guy John Lovell / Warrior Poet's view on a lot of things, the bug out bag included. He's a former Ranger and comes from a Christian worldview which I know is not for everyone I know but I really dig it. And yeah he is super cheesy at times...

Anyway, outside of things like Hurricane's or living downtown NYC, he promotes the concepts of "truck bags", "get home bags" and "bug in bags" which made me rethink a bunch of stuff.

Longish video but I think it's worth your time to get you thinking about a few aspects you may not have considered. Love the anecdote towards the end about him consulting for a guy that spent 6 figures in prepping.

Yeah, I can see very different needs based on what kind of disaster/incident we are responding to. My needs and plans will be different if it is a hurricane/flood vs civil war/large scale rioting vs an EMP attack/Carrington Event that knocks out the grid and all electronics for months/years. In the first 2, I am going to stay home and hunker down in most cases. In the last one, I am probably going to try to get away from the large population areas.

One of my additions to my kit. I don't even care for my Glock BUT having two guns that share ammo/mags that are both that compact is very nice. Plus... very lightweight

It will be underwater within weeks due to climate change melting the ice caps if you don't act now!

No, the nuclear winter caused by the nuke exchange will refreeze them. No worries there.

A lot of good points here. The part about just leaving where you are thinking "the grass is greener" somewhere else is a good point. Unless you have a specific place to go to, you are just a refugee.

At the ripe young age of 70, I think I'll stay and protect my home depending on what is happening. If it's my time to check out, I'll do it at home where my arsenal is.

Edit to add: I'm just waiting to add one last firearm to add. Waiting for stock to replenish on the PSA AKV9. I've got everything else.

Another option is an adaptor that plugs into your vehicle 12V jack and provides USB ports. That will keep your cell phone going as long as you have gas in your tank.

You can also buy a small inverter that runs off your vehicle battery if you need more current.

The nice thing about living where we do I have no desire to "go" anywhere. In the event we find ourselves in the situation, I'll stay right where I am, I've got family north of me, family south of me and can see approaching folks for over a mile.

I've got plenty of beef, plenty of veggies (frozen and in a garden) access to 6 water wells, and enough seed wheat in the bin to plant a few hundred acres.

If stuff pops off, all I have to do is get home, I don't let my pickup get below 1/2 tank, and have plans for 1,000 gallons of road diesel, 1,000 gallons of farm diesel and 500 gallons of unleaded to be delivered next week. For me and my family we will be fine. We can circle the wagons and have the firepower and the know how to hold our own.

We lost electricity for days during a hurricane last year and I learned something very important. If I don't have TV, A/C, hot meals and a fully charged iPhone, I just don't want to live. So we'll need to add a bug out home to our bag.

I'd rather not be dependent on a vehicle for that. If I have to leave the vehicle behind, I still want to be able to get power if needed.
