Anyone else put out old round bales around ponds to serve as cover? Do you think they affect flight patterns?

I won't be able to put them out early this year and am wondering if I put them out on Aug 31 or even opening day if they will do more harm that good. Thoughts?

TIA

I recommend just parking a truck and sitting on the tailgate.

Dove like to fly directly over said tailgate right when you leave it to find a "better" spot.

DO NOT do this. It is illegal to hunt dove from a vehicle.

Been a while since I've done this, but I love Dove hunting behind bales. Great cover, and you can lean against the bale as the dove come in.

I wouldnt think it will affect them by putting the bales out late.

I have hunted standing/sitting next to hay bales for over 40 years. Nothing better IMO.

Stand up to shoot. Not illegal.

Not illegal if truck has clearly been parked and you're outside of it before and while shooting.

What about sitting in the cab with the window cracked 4", the engine running, the ac cranked up and the parking brake on? Asking for a friend.

You're overthinking it. While it might be illegal. A clearly parked truck nose into the tree line sitting on the tailgate, I've had plenty of GW encounters and no issues.

That's what we do... we just shoot them when they land on the pile of corn.

It's illegal to hunt migratory birds from a *moving* vehicle.

By your logic, you can't hunt ducks from a boat either.

Just act like your taking a leak, they will fly at you right as you start a stream.

Bottom of the page. Doesn't say anything about moving. Had a friend get a ticket sitting on the tailgate. Now maybe he fired a shot while sitting. It's been quite a while, so I might not remember all the details. Do so at your own risk.

Stack 3 bales on the flat end. 12 feet tall using 4x5 bales. The east side of the bales will have afternoon shade to sit in.
I also like having bales positioned in a harvested field to space hunters out, making sure they are a safe distance apart.

All you have to do is be sitting on your bucket or bag chair at the back of the truck (not on your truck tailgate) with your doves separate from anyone else's. That removes the issue of hunting from a motor vehicle whether stationary or in motion as you are utilizing your chair/bucket. As well as removes the issue of party hunting which is typically the most common ticket issued as most groups just have all of their birds in a pile on the tailgate.
