1. Other than magazine capacity, does the 5.7 offer any capability that I could not get with a .45, 9mm, or .380?

2. Is ammo possible to find?

3. Is the FN version really worth $400 more than the Ruger?

5.7 is going to tear through just about anything. If you care about that

I would never replace my 9mm or other defensive rounds with it. It's a fun range gun, but that's about it. I like the Ruger since it's similar to 1911 controls. Ammo is impossible to find in a normal market so it rarely gets shot.

I wish Ruger would make the charger in 5.7.

Six years ago I bought the FN MK 2 model NIB just because I wanted one. In that time I've shot it at the outdoor range five times. Champion doesn't allow the use of the 5.7 x 28 round at their indoor range. I still have about 350 rounds for it including some of the hot armor piercing stuff.

With a full magazine It weighs about 1.5 pounds. The Ruger is just a little more than that. I've had a few failure to feed when using American Eagle ammo but I have had no issues when using the FN brand. Recoil is quite manageable, very similar to my PMR 30 .22 Mag., and the trigger on my FN is right at 5 pounds. The flash in low light is awesome.

I posted a photo on this forum a couple years ago that showed the penetration of three rounds I shot into a thick (I'm guessing 3") equipment catalog. Penetrated all the way through. Can't find that photo now but it should still be on TexAgs.

Is rhe 5.7 x 28 round suitable for home or self defense? This is a pretty good write up and video that attempts to answer those questions. I personally would not have a problem with either. I do occasionally conceal carry it.

I learned a lot about the 5.7 x 28 round from Mister Shipwreck the Outdoor Beretta Guru who still occasionally posts here. Maybe he will see this and chime in.

You're basically firing a rifle round out of a handgun.

What's not to like?

Just adding that Ruger finally released a threaded barrel!

The kelTEC p50 is pretty neat, imho.

I have been putting more thought to the DB57 than I have any of the other pistols. Mainly because it would be easier to put a red dot, side folding brace, and a suppressor on!

I've wanted an FN 5.7 ever since I played Splinter Cell. But I've heard horror stories. From what I've seen on Demo Ranch, there's virtually no kick.

My favorite handgun. Plenty of punch with very little recoil. Never had any jamming problems.. edit to add rounds are pricey if you plan to shoot a lot of paper

That's not true.

I used the be the admin of the FN forum over a decade ago. And, I have a lot of experience with the platform.

The round is designed to not over penetrate. Even the armor piercing round, despite the fact it can go thru armor, it designed to not over penetrate, FN used to have videos showing a P90 firing the AP round, into a cinderblock. It goes through the 1st part of the cinderblock and into the open hole of the block - it stops before it exits the cinderblock. That was actually a pretty interesting video.

I've seen homemade videos online of the 197 round being stopped by a 2nd sheetrock interior wall. Very little, if any of the round, made it thru the 2nd wall.

It's actually a good weapon, IMHO, if you live in an apartment. It will go thru far fewer interior walls than a 9mm round will. Of course, there is a tradeoff. It penetrates less inside of tissue. But, there is less recoil, allowing you to put more rounds on target because of less recoil.

Champion used to let it be shot in their indoor range. I used to shoot my PS90s there. They eventually stopped it. I asked why - I was told they switched insurance companies. The round will not penetrate their backstop. But, their place, their rules.

There are a lot of misconceptions for the round.

I have owned a Five Seven and 3 PS90s over the years.

I wouldn't buy one now - good luck finding ammo at a decent price. Go look what it costs now online.

Also, I'd skip the American Eagle brand of 5.7 ammo. The damn round separates from the case way too easily on that brand. I've tried it before, and it is really sad.

I'd get factory ammo - the 198 is the best and more reliable for civilian ammo. The 197 is made in America, and can be inconsistently loaded from round to round. It's noticeable just in 1 box (the difference between each round) The 198 ammo is loaded in Belgium, and is much more reliable and consistent.

Wasn't the thought behind it to be a cartridge you could use in a pistol and a carbine. Kinda for personal security.

One ammo with option to use pistol or carbine for different situations.

It was originally designed for a PDW (the P90). Then they added the pistol design afterwards. However, you get less velocity thru the pistol, and the ballistics and lethality of the round goes further south thru the pistol.

The ballistics of the PS90 with the 16" civilian barrel is better than the 10" P90 ballistics as well.

In a PS90, the force of the round is approx equal to a 9mm round. It will have worse ballistics out of the pistol.

I just bought a thing. Loaded mag and round compared to 9mm. I'll get a Ruger 57 when it comes threaded from the factory.

Thanks for the info.

I'm just thinking of getting something I don't already have, and that is one of the options I'm looking at.

I'd argue that it is far closer to a rifle round than a pistol round, though it is in reality somewhere in between the two.

Very similar to the StG 44 round in that it is an intermediate round that bridges a gap between a full rifle round and a pistol round and is designed for an SBR/PDW type firearm versus full rifle or pistol.

You can find them at $1600 pretty regularly and I've seen one at $1500.

Depends on where you find them. If you find them at the regular retail guys, you'll see them at 1500-1600. Gunbroker is sitting around 1700 plus for BIN so most gun store will be around 1750-1800 probably.
