How long do you want to ignore this user?
my friend's 3 yr old English bulldog has a pyometra and needs surgery to remove it. His vet can't schedule before Wednesday and obviously it should be removed asap, but every vet is quoting 6k for the emergency surgery vs 2k for Wednesday. Can't really afford to do more than 3kish. Willing to travel outside of Houston (and is actually in Baytown area)

does anyone know of any good options or vets that would be available earlier at a similar price?

Not sure why it's so pricey. Isn't it basically just a spay? We had a laparoscopic spay done at Blue Pearl in Spring done for $3k.

(Blue Pearl is an emergency vet, which is why I mentioned it, and laparoscopic is typically much more expensive.)

A&M's ER and surgical specialists are always open. Not sure if you're willing to drive to BCS.

A pyometra surgery is much more involved than a conventional spay and can't be done laparoscopic due to risk of the uterus rupturing in the abdomen. You need a much larger incision, antibiotics, fluids, and more things than you do with a conventional spay. We had one yesterday that was about $2.2k. She is a 100 pound lab, so the antibiotic cost was up there. For relative comparison, a conventional spay for a dog that size at our clinic would be $7-800 and a laparoscopic spay $1000(apparently we need to charge more).

Sorry fellows. English Bulldog is a genetic train wreck to start with. There is no routine hysterectomy. An English Bulldog could go tits up just trying to breath on a cool fall day. Should have had a "routine" spay a year ago. Good luck and get the recommended surgery ASAP. Surgeon should be duly compensated for performing on this case!

I definitely don't want anyone thinking that I think that the vet shouldn't get paid what's reasonable at all. I'm just trying to help the lil pup as much as I can. I know 6k isn't in the wallet right now, so that means hard decisions and hoping for the best unless we can find someone who can do it sooner.

English bulldogs are definitely funny little animals. I swear they are like the heaviest smallest animals. tiny hippos that snore louder than a freight train, but I love his dog dearly and just think she's the sweetest thing.

thank you all for your help!

so there is good news! they fit the pup in for surgery this morning, but pyometra was a false alarm and instead just had a emergency..in heat spay.

puppers is home and well and her snuffly snuggly self.
