I haven't seen this website mentioned here but Pew Science has been a pretty good resource on silencer information. It's somewhat new, so not every silencer (or silencer/caliber combo) has been tested yet, but it's very interesting. Better yet, it's Aggie owned and operated. He can get deep into the details and I don't understand everything he discusses, but he does a good job of simplifying the final numbers on his research. He also breaks down the sound waves a bit to show that peak decibel levels shouldn't be the sole determining factor of silencer performance. Go check it out.

The founder is a fellow ag. Has talked with me a lot on his company and the data being produced. He's helped me a lot make educated decisions on suppressor purchases.

Hey fellow Ags-

I was sent a link to this by one of your folks. I've known about this Texas Ags website for some time, and I think I've been here before, but it's been a while. Since I have a public facing business that is online, I decided to make an account with my business name here. Took me a minute; had to validate through the Aggie Network site, etc. Remembering my UIN was interesting hahaha

I'm class of '04; grad school in '05. I'm a licensed and practicing professional engineer.

In my main career, I worked for the US Government (DoD and other) after graduating A&M, and have been in the private sector now since around 2008. My research and practice areas are antiterrorism/force protection, weapons effects, protective design, and dynamic analysis, modeling, and testing. I focus on creating systems and technology to protect people.

PEW Science is my company I've been running for the past few years. My goal is to provide the best and most comprehensive data on suppressed small arm weapon systems, in the world. To that end, I have published a significant amount of data on my website. It's all free.

It's funded by grass roots support and private R&D contracts. In return for folks supporting the effort, I give a little more data, and a "thank you."

Thanks again for mentioning my effort, and please reach out any time!

Very cool website.

I'm a data/analytics guy and always like to look through all the details and specs when making a purchase. So when I was researching suppressors last year to get my very first one, the biggest thing that bothered me was how hard it was to get a straight line comparison of suppression abilities for models across different brands. This website would've been perfect for me to use as a reference and I definitely will the next time I'm looking to buy another one.

Welcome aboard, Jay! It's good to have you here and I think a lot of us will benefit from your work. Not only have the reviews been helpful to me, but the podcasts have been enlightening as well. I'm several podcasts behind right now but luckily I have about 24 hours worth of flights coming up this month so I can knock a few out on the plane.

Also, I started the paperwork for a CGS Hyperion today, based on your data. I'll probably get the Helios TI when it's available, as well. Now I just wait...

Plus, it never hurts to have ones silencer choices confirmed as good ones

Thanks for the info. Not sure where you're located but I have a number of cans that aren't on your list, if you're looking to do more testing.

Thanks! Awesome that you enjoy the podcast. It's super fun to do! I really enjoy it. I am glad it helps folks understand the publications, as well.

Ah, the Hyperion. Yeah - it's a wild silencer. Such a good rifle silencer. It shines on so many platforms. The R&D sample of the CGS Helios QD Ti that I am currently using on my 11.5" midlength gas machine gun is amazing. Not sure when it will be released. This year I think.

Thank you, and you are most welcome! haha! It's great to have characterization of products you already own, I think!

I'm in South Texas. I appreciate your offer! PEW Science is an 07/02 entity, so if you are serious about loaning some silencers for testing, please contact me through the website, or shoot an email to tech@pewscience.com and we can talk about it!

Seems to me that the best way to measure effectiveness is to use the same platform so that you are eliminating different variables. You aren't doing that for the most part. Why is that?

Welcome aboard Jay. Any plans to review any of the Banish silencers from Silencer Central/Dakota?

I am most certainly doing that; perhaps you are looking at some data in a different context. Can you share an example?

I may test them; however, their designs are very simple curved cone baffles that most likely do not perform much differently than other such designs, so the knowledge gained from those tests would probably be minimal. For completeness, yes they will be tested. Their company reached out to me for consulting but went dark on comms.... not sure what their status is. Would be good to get them evaluated eventually!

I was looking at it quickly and didn't realize you were testing the .300 BO subs on one platform, supers on another, etc. My mistake.

Ah, no problem! I figured that, maybe.

It's been really interesting characterizing the silencers in different flow pressure and velocity regimes. The behavior of a silencer in different flow regimes can be strikingly different. Certain silencers perform better in certain flows, and some perform well on both - others don't perform well on either! hahaha

Some neat conclusions so far. I think it is going to put us in a great position when I start releasing semi- and fully-automatic rifle data. That's gonna be neat.

Hey Ags.

Wasn't sure if you guys knew - but in addition to the silencer data I publish, I also do a podcast every week. It's called The Jay Situation.

I usually release the episodes on Wednesdays!

Today is Episode 70. I touch on some factors one may consider when selecting a multiuse silencer, or a silencer in general!

You can get it on pewscience.com and all major providers.
Direct-download from the website, or use your favorite provider below:
Amazon Music | Google Podcasts | iTunes | Spotify | Stitcher | TuneIn | Direct RSS Link

Today's topics:
  • Multi-use silencers. Usually, they suck. But also, they don't have to. Which use cases are smart to combine? How much is too much? (00:17:32)
  • New Sound Signature Review coming this week. Are you ready? Any guesses? (01:33:54)
  • Welcome to all the new PEW Science members doctors, scientists, students, LEOs, manufacturers all family. Thank you all for your support. (01:37:02)
Thanks again, guys!

Thank you, sir.

I will stop in! I saw a post on the board today about thermal (a gentleman was asking about clip-on options) and I almost responded to say that is a terrible idea, and I looked, and some Ags already started to guide him correctly - dedicated thermal scopes for rifles are the way. Almost always.

Cool board you guys have here. Thanks again!

Welcome Jay! The last thing I need in my life is more data and projects but I sense a huge time suck about to take place and I'm looking forward to it!

Good job on the site, looking forward to checking out the podcast as well.

Thank you, sir!

I just published another report this morning.

Griffin Optimus (in its longest possible configuration) on supersonic .308. It did better than I thought it would; the Gen 2 baffles seem to balance suppression and backpressure better than the Gen 1 baffles I previously evaluated in their "Explorr" silencer.

Here's a link!

The owners from Richmond Tactical sent me the review you did on their products. Didn't realize it was publicly accessible until stumbling across this thread. Very cool stuff!

I ended up buying the Helios (check cashed 11/3/21) and received it 12/24/21 as part of a batch approval. I'm hoping Jay tests it on 300 Blackout. The Hyperion did really, really well on it when Jay tested it. Of course that was bolt action. I'm wondering how both cans will do on a Honey Badger semi auto. I've got both Thunder Chicken and Trash Panda but would swap out if it made sense.

Jay was up at Top Gun Range in Houston today for a meet and greet. He said it was the first time he's done anything like this. He was genuinely thankful for all the members that support him. It was cool to see how much he cared about his work and his supporters. Gig 'em, Jay!
