Disappointing Day at the Range

Months ago I purchased a 6x45 barrel and reloading dies here from another OBer. Built an upper for it and have waited months to finally score the powder I needed.

A quick visit to Eyeguy and the glass was taken care of. Loaded up a mess of rounds and headed to American Shooting Center today to give her a run.

So the book says COL of 2.350, which I was right on. I had seen some references to 2.260 but ignored those. Except, 2.260 is what fits in an AR mag. So I'm sitting at the bench waiting to post a target when I decided to go ahead and load up a magazine. That's when I figured it out. A rookie reloading mistake, no doubt.

It felt like a Giddings going live thread.

Gidding's going live threads beat a day at the office.

That's ok. I remember one day I loaded 500 rounds of 6.5CM and set everything in 1/8" too deep.

There are much, much worse ways to screw up reloading.

Might talk to the guys at dedicated technologies. They make a mag that allows out to 2.30. No clue if it works with your round though.

You still could have loaded them in the chamber one by one.

You should give up on 6x45 and sell me the dies ASAP.

But seriously,
6x45 was originally an old school bench rest wildcat. It was pretty successful until the 6ppc came around. A lot of load data is for bolt action rifles. It got popular in ARs for obvious reasons and is now SAAMI. But the OAL has always been a big limitation with AR 15s. Some people are modifying mags to have a cut out in the front and only loading about 5 rounds. The front of the magwell becomes the limiting factor.

You are fine since you just need to adjust your seater die and run them through again. This is why its best to bring a press to the range during load development.

But for real, if you want to sell your dies let me know.

I have the 6x45 or 6mm/223 in a TC contender 14" bull barrel. I don't know if will give the same results in your AR, but my most accurate load was using the Speer 80gr spitzer with 25.0gr H322. I consistently held 1/4" 100yd groups. AA2230 gave the best velocities with groups opening up to 1/2 to 3/4".

What dies do you use? I have a Redding FL sizing die but I am having a hard time getting a Forster micrometer seater die which is my preferred seating die. I understand the Hornady 243 seating die with the sliding sleeve will work for 6x45 so I am trying to track one down until I can get the Forster.

I have an Impact/Bartlien build underway.

I don't make rookie mistakes. I at least take functioning weapons along when I go somewhere....

45 years ago... Neighbor use to be a big golfer. Came home sold every club, ball, shoe, anything related to golf. Went out and bought every gun and every reloading thing he could get his hands on.

I would go over as a kid and watch, he taught me some things and I would go over and reload tons of things for him.

He turned into quite the range guy. He would take all his stuff and a book, take a shot, write it down, take a shot write it down. 6,7,8 different rifles. 3 or 4 grain settings per. Its what he did. I know you all do it to.

Anyway, he had taken his 25.06 and his 30.06 to the range. Was shooting when s friend came up behind him. they chatted a while, then he took is 25.06 shell and put it in his 30.06 rifle and pulled the trigger....

He survived, but scared the holy bejeeezes out of him and everyone else on the range...

I have RCBS dies.

I am loading those same projectiles with H322. Loaded from minimum (23.1?) up to 25.1 by 0.2 (would have to go upstairs to confirm numbers). Hopefully I'll have similar results. I would also like to load an 85 grain round like an interlock or partition, once I can find some.

Fortunately? I had a revolver and some wad cutters so i was able to punch some holes in some paper. But I hate the pistol range at American, especially on weekends. Got to keep your head on a swivel and it's hard to relax and enjoy yourself.

My boys, 18 and 16, were sitting in blind together last year. One had his 308 and the other 243.

Long story short, 243 ammo (both boys had Remington green-yellow boxes of ammo in respective caliber) got loaded into 308 rifle. Son #2 pulls down on buck and shoots. To make matters worse 308 has can. No effect.
Chambers another round takes aim and same effect. Deer runs off. Brother #2 gives Brother #1` a bunch of trouble about Brother #1's rifle being off.

I picked them up from the blind and said WTF...Happened to look in blind and gave them a bunch of crap about leaving empty shells in blind and not picking up after themselves. That's when I found the 243 brass...

Guess I did a crappy job of raising those two...

Lesson learned.

Your lives show very little evidence of this.

I use Redding FL sizer and Seating Dies. Full length resize without bumping the shoulder. With this round in the contender, bumping the shoulder back during resizing can cause misfires. You probably won't have that problem with the AR.

That shouldn't have done anything more than fireform the 25-06 back to 30-06.
