Was on the federal duck stamp last year. They're all over the hood in Cypress.

It is a black bellied whistling duck.

Had a few on my game camera last week.

Also have one on my wall. They're beautiful mounts.

I was in a group of 4 that shot about half of limit of Black Bellied Whistling ducks near Palacios. Also shot two Fulvous near the same place that are on my wall.

Squealers are thick in the rice fields around Winnie every teal season but they're invariably gone by the time they're legal to shoot in big duck season.

Maybe if you're further south on the coast you'll have a chance.

It's usually only the first weekend or two we see big groups. The Fulvous are gone wayyy before them.

They like acorns and will hang out on roofs until traffic dies down.

Had a group grow over the years and would visit us like clock work in the summer evening.

No dice on that. Natives.

Only true "tree nesting" duck. Note: not "cavity nesting". Closer related to swans than ducks.

I've killed them at Choke. Also on the upper Laguna.

One evening my daughter and I were on a spoil in the upper Laguna picking up dekes following a slow evening hunt. Lots of these ducks hang out in Flour Bluff and a flock wanted to be on that spoil. My daughter killed a mature one with great plumage, it made a trip to the taxi.

Oh and they are one of the best eating ducks, too.

They roost on the power lines at night almost year round near our house in West Houston. They nest in tree cavities and then take their ducklings down to the local retention ponds or Langham Creek, whichever is closest.

I was going to suggest the Laguna Madre, Choke, or Mathis as a place to catch them during the season.

Nah Choke wouldn't be a good choice. Very few ducks there. Pretty much a dump of a lake. I wouldn't waste my time there.

I've had multiple people tell me that. Especially the ones who have been able to bag one hanging out in the rice fields around Winnie. They're fattened up on rice and supposed to be really tasty.

As an aside, any duck hanging out in the rice fields and eating mostly rice is likely to be pretty damn good eating. If the fat is white they're going to taste good. Orange fat is a a gumbo duck.

We have six or eight living in the top of our palm tree. They hang out on the roof every evening before they go to their nest.

Interested in getting into the these myself. Would you recommend that I high-fence and stock?
