My kids are bugging me for a bigger pool this summer. They're 9, 6, and 2. We've always just bought the little inflatable wading pools for them.

We had an above ground pool when I was a young'un, but I don't have any idea what brand. Besides, that was 30 years ago. I'm sure they've changed just a tad.

Do any of y'all have any real world experience to offer with above ground pools? Presumably one of the metal frame types that I can drain and store in the barn over the winter.

TIA

Are you still rocking your mullet from 30 years ago to go along with your above-ground pool? I kid, I kid...

Mullets are cool again. And so, apparently, is converting a cattle tank into an above ground pool in your master planned track home subdivision.

That's not directed at OP - its actually a thing judging by what my wife has shown me on instagram

That's bush league. The new hotness is converting a shipping container into a pool.

I had me a Redneck Riviera, kids loved it, I hated it. Always had flying ants in it, they are attracted to the sparkle. Always had leaves but you don't have real trees so that isn't an issue, dust will be yours. My kids were youung and it got hot very quickly,by August is was a hot tub. Did I mention that draining that much heavily chlorinated water across the yard was not great for the grass.

If you're near College Station and want a 28' with oversized filter, let me know and you can have it. It was a great pool but my kids are no longer interested.

Thanks, but I'm a good ways from College Station.

Any idea what brand it is?

We went as large as an Intex 15' circular pool with a 48" depth. Max water level was prob 42". My friend bought a 12x18 I thinkmaybe 12x20. General thoughts.

-Cheap, fun, very durable
-Setup and leveling is very important.
-You'll never really get the chemical level just right.
-Filters need constant changing on the pumps.
-Attracts bugs as noted above but not terrible
-If we get a hurricane or tropical storm you'll have to eyeball the water level and run a pump to prevent overflow
-ladder is usually cheap and not very stable.
-surface cleaning is super easy with an average net
-when you finally take it down it smells like an elephants habitat due to all the dead and decaying grass underneath.

You can spend time on it and make it look pretty decent from an aesthetics standpoint. You can also make it look really crappy if you just throw it together.

I never had any major regrets and if my kids were as young as yours I'd do it again

I will also add we NEVER kept one stored after summer. Pre covid prices were very cheap and it was just easier to buy one each summer vs dealing with drainage, drying it out, and storing it.

We've got the stock tank for the 3rd summer this year. Good for small kids and adults but probably not what a 9 year old wants. Just enough room to sit in and drink a beer while the toddlers splash around.

I picked up a 15' steel one from Leslies for $1200 including the pump/filter and ladder. Will probably look a little tacky but and definitely not last as long as an in ground or aluminum above ground.

I'll probably leave it up year round since it gets hot enough for me to enjoy it 6-8 months out of the year and don't think I'd want to deal with the dead grass in winter.

Even if it only lasts one summer I won't be out too much money.

I'd just go with something like The Pool Guy's pool in CS. Budget be damned. http://thepoolguybcs.com/thehawthornepool

For what that deck is going to cost, you might as well just build an in ground pool.

We put up the smaller intex 12' inflatable above ground pool every year and I have embraced my white trashiness. We also put a canopy over ours bc otherwise it's hot and slimy. The cover makes a HUGE difference. My kids are 6 and 9 and they still enjoy it but obviously not as much as a real pool but we hit the river and lake a lot. Hell most evenings as parents we get in it to relax and have a drink when kids are in bed. We also want to "upgrade" to the stock tank pool but our pool is still good so we will prob trash it this year and go stock tank next year. It's definitely worth the money to us.

I have one of those $200 Walmart super heavy liner only pools for 2.5 years now, and it works pretty good. 42" x 14'. Don't get too crazy in it, but it's great for a relaxing swim or floating around with a cold beer.

Figured I'd go ahead and do it. This is the OB after all. Best above ground pool is an Endless Pool.

Upgrade it with a King Ranch F-250 and you can have the very best in above ground pools.

I would suggest going to a place like a-tex pools in austin and get one that has a really good quality filter.

It will be way easier to maintain and keep the water clear and enjoyable.

One of the happiest days of my adult life was watching the last load of our above ground pool leaving my driveway.

That's the way a lot of adults feel, but the kids feel very different.

We got an above ground pool the summer before I went into high school and we loved it. I was 14, my brother was 12 and my sister was 9.

Nailed it. Even the times I hated looking at mine, the kids playing and having fun all summer was worth it. Lots of great memories.

Yes, it's big and I upgraded to a larger diatomaceous earth filter. Balance the water early in the season and your pretty much set for the year.
