Inshore fishing line preference

I've been using 50lb Power Pro because that is what my reels are already spooled with. I recently put together a dedicated inshore wade fishing setup and curious to know everyone's preference on line. Daiwa J-braid grand gets great reviews, though I am open to other options. Torn between 20 or 30lb test as well. I almost exclusively throw plastics and use a 30lb fluoro leader. Looking to get better casting distance by going to a lighter weight line.

Sufix 832 in 30# test in all my reels - baitcast and spinning

I use #30 Power Pro fishing around shrimp boats in the summer time. In the flats I go a lot lighter than most people that post on here. I used #8 Magna Thin for years. I tried braid but wind knots ate me up. On a trip to Brazil we used #30 Power Pro and it was great.

When we came back I tried #15 Power Pro with a #20 Seaguar shock leader. No issues. I put a premium on distance.

Almost the same except I just go straight 30 with no leader

Thanks guys, I'm thinking I'll drop down in leader weight as well. Maybe go 20lb for both braid and leader. It seems everyone is tying directly to the leader. I've always used a swivel at the connection for better presentation but is that unnecessary?

I use 12 lb fluorocarbon to 20 lb braid, uni to uni knot.

I'd go 30 pound. Any smaller diameter will be a bear if you get a backlash.

I used to do a lot of kayak fishing and you can get away with a lot lighter line when you just let them tow the kayak around as an additional drag.

Ditch the swivel and tie direct to your leader. If you want a little extra action on your jig, use a non-slip loop knot. Works great with 20 lb seaguar fluoro leader.

Is it stronger to get rid of the swivel? I'm already doing a loop knot at the jighead.

Keep in mind the lighter more supple braided lines use thinner individual strands that will wear down from abrasion with sand or shell and gradually weaken the end length of the line well below new strength without being very obvious. As long as your line strength is significantly above your max drag, you'll have plenty of safe margin on a big fish.

Caught a 42" king on a trout rod with a citca on it once, 30lb braid. Cranked the drag to almost max (about 15 lb) and held on. He took me to the mono backing before he turned, but that entire solid run 150 yards the reel safely applied almost max drag to the line and it held.

Good point about the max drag. I picked up a 13 Fishing Concept A which has 25lbs drag, might want to reconsider going down to 20lb test. I think it would be fine though, especially since the breaking strength on most braid is ~1.5 what it's rated at.

Fins 40G. Comes in 25lb so it splits the difference between 20 and 30. Typically use 20lb leader for plastics and jigs, 30lb leader for live bait, corks, and corkies/topwater

12# Trilene Big Game, swivel, 30# mono leader, loop knot ( not if the lure has a split ring)

Either 30lb Sufix 832 braid tied to a 20lb flouro leader, or 10lb mono tied to 20lb flouro leader. I almost always use a non-slip loop knot to the eye of the plug, jig head, or spoon.

30lb power pro super slick 8 on all my baitcasters. Don't own a saltwater spinning reel. I hate the way the drag works in spinning reels. Have found that with 8 strand braid 30lb is better, as bigger fish when pulling drag will not cause the line to dig in on the spool as bad.

ETA: I don't fish any type leader. Too busy catching fish to tie anything more complicated!!

I think it's a problem with the smaller diameter also

Haven't yet heard the justification for tying leader to braid versus a swivel. Curious to hear everyone's thoughts.

Old School here.

10lb mono Trilene XL with a 30 lb fluorocarbon leader. We fish with 2000 or 2500 series Shimano spinning reels and medium fast action rods. Light stuff, but fun.

50 lb. Power Pro. It's 12lb. equivalent mono diameter. For years I used 12 lb. Trilene Big Game mono so I guess I'm used to the same diameter for braid.

I top it off with a small Spro barrel swivel and then about 18" of flouro.

Hasn't failed me yet.
